HE DIED FOR ME

Taken from Senior Life Ministries

If you were to look at Rembrandt’s famous painting The Three Crosses, you’d notice the focal point of the painting is the centre cross onto which Jesus is nailed. Around the cross, you’d see Roman guards, mourning disciples, and a crowd of people scoffing and mocking the Lord as He dies

As you look down at the edge of the painting, there’s a shadowy figure, almost hidden from sight, whose face can barely be made out. Most art historians believe this is a representation of Rembrandt himself, who recognized that his sins were culpable in nailing Jesus to the cross. Watching passion plays and reading the story of the crucifixion, it can be easy to walk away thinking, “How could those people send Jesus to the cross?” But the truth is that by our sin, we’re as responsible as those who drove the nails through His hands. The cross is a result of our sin. But praise God that Jesus finished His work on the cross, taking away our sins and granting eternal life to those who believe in Him. That’s why we call today “Good Friday,” because while it was terrible for Jesus, it was good for us. As we enter this weekend of reflection on Jesus’ death and resurrection, remember why He died and thank God that by His death, you can have eternal life

PRAYER CHALLENGE

Pray that God would move you to deep thankfulness for Jesus taking away your sins on the cross.

One of the world’s greatest scientists was also recognized as the original absent-minded professor. One day, on board a train, he was unable to find his ticket. The conductor said, Take it easy. You’ll find it.

When the conductor returned, the professor still couldn’t find the ticket The conductor, recognizing the famous scientist, said, “I’m sure you bought a ticket Forget about it.”

“You’re very kind,” he said, “but I must find it otherwise I won’t know where to get off.”

‘I wonder if you remember me? Years ago you asked me to marry you.”

“Ah yes … and did you?

STRUCTURING FOR SUCCESS

Let another praise you, and not your own mouth; someone else, and not your own lips” -Proverbs 27:2

Praise is a wonderful thing. It can lift us up when we’re discouraged. It can motivate us when we’re struggling. It can make us feel loved, valuable, and respected.

But to do all that, praise must come from someone else. When it comes from within, it’s really just pride.

Few things are more unattractive than a person who toots his own horn. We all know people like this—whenever they accomplish something, we fear they might break their arms patting themselves on the back. But self-praise often is much more subtle than that. It doesn’t just involve saying things such as, “Boy, didn’t I do a good job with this?” or “Can you believe I thought of that?” It also manifests itself in sly references to whom we know, where we’ve been, or what we have.

When was the last time you dropped a name or two in a staff meeting? Were you trying to build yourself up—to praise yourself—by letting your co-workers know about the elite circles that you run in? When you’re standing around the water cooler talking about your recent vacation, are you sure to mention the number of stars your hotel had or the fact that you spent four hundred dollars on a meal for you and your spouse? What did you hope to accomplish by revealing those facts?

Great Grey Owl

Think about your motives before you spout off such information. And do the same before you toot your own horn. Don’t put yourself in the spotlight; instead, focus on complimenting others. If your work is worthy of commendation, it will be noticed eventually. And when the praise comes from someone else, it’s much, much sweeter.

THE BLESSED PROVISION OF THE NEW COVENANT

After God’s Spirit left King Saul, his half-hearted obedience had opened him up to Satan’s influence. Soon an evil spirit troubled Saul and he ended up seeking counsel from a witch (see 1 Samuel 28).

Perhaps as you read the account of Saul’s life, you wonder, “But Saul tried his best and he didn’t do that bad of a job. Why was God so severe with him?”

God is telling us through this passage that He means what He says! He is saying, “I’m showing you how I feel about your obedience to Me. I want all your heart, all your love—not just a half-hearted obedience!”

If the Lord’s message to Saul had been foggy or unclear, we would be justified in saying He should have made an allowance. But His direction to Saul was clear and there was no doubting what He commanded. Likewise today, we have no doubt about what God has spoken to us. We know what His commandments are, because He has revealed them to us by His word and by His Spirit within our hearts.

You may answer, “But what God did to Saul happened under the Old Covenant, under the Law. We live in a day of grace now. Surely the Lord won’t be as severe with us when we disobey as He was with Saul.”

Here is God’s word on the matter under the New Covenant, a covenant of grace: “[God] will render to every man according to his deeds: to them who by patient continuance in well-doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life: but unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath, tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile; but glory, honour, and peace, to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile: for there is no respect of persons with God” (Romans 2:6-11).

Let me spell out the difference for you between Saul in the Old Testament and all believers under the New Covenant: Whenever a person truly has a desire to obey God’s commands—when that person loves and respects God’s Word—the Holy Ghost supplies him with all power and ability to fulfill those commands. That is the blessed provision of the New Covenant.

BEST SAVE I HAVE SEEN

ASTON Villa goalkeeper Brad Guzan has told of the ultimate save – when Jesus turned around his life.

The giant 29-year-old stopper, who has won 24 caps for America, is settling well into Me in the Premier League. He is popular with Villa fans and has been a crucial part of their improving fortunes this season.

But the 6ft 4in ‘keeper says football isn’t his number one priority – his faith comes first.

“You have to have Jesus in your life,” he said. “That is how I get through my personal Me, how I get through my professional Me – following Christ. He helps me through the tough times. It hasn’t always been a rosy road to success, and there are always going to be bumps along the way. Jesus helped me through all of those struggles.

“I think as a younger man in my early 20s, I would sit down and say, Thank you God’, when things were going well. But when you get older you realise that there is a bigger picture than doing well on the football field.

“It’s about life.  It’s about following Christ. So when things are going well – great – I give praise to him; and when things are not going well, I ask for his guidance and his help to keep me going in the right path.”

And despite earning thousands of pounds per week and becoming a Premier League star, Guzan says God keeps him humble.

He added: “I think we all need Christ in our lives. Money, fame, all those objects, they don’t mean anything if you don’t have Jesus in your Me.

“All of those things can be gone in the blink of an eye. We can’t get caught up in it. As professional footballers we are very privileged to do what we do and to be role models.”

Meanwhile, Guzan revealed he meets with Christian team-mates from the American national team to pray and study the Bible. He said: “Our group of national team brothers comes together to pray, to speak about the Bible and Jesus Christ, to help each other through his plan for all of us. It is unique and most of all, it is awesome.

“We’re able to, come together from all over the world at different parts of our careers, at different ages, with one common goal of talking about Jesus Christ and representing him on the national team. I think that our little group of players has slowly gotten bigger.

“As we bring more players into the national team, more guys are joining discussions about Jesus, the  Bible and what it means to be a follower”.

ACTS OF SERVICE

Nikki

“As for me and my house – we will serve the Lord” (Joshua 24:15)

Did you know that pulling together makes things happen? For each individual trained soldier on the front line of active duty, 20 men are required to get him there. The truth behind this is that the 20 are just as valuable as the one when it comes to the achievement of that singular soldier.

An Act of Service is something that eases the burden or responsibilities weighing on an individual or group of people. Put simply, the ability to help others.

Whilst we all most certainly have the ability to help, we also need to be fuelled by desire. Acts of Service require a selfless generosity to supply and assist in others time of need. Filling the void, bridging the gap and being part of the remedy, for no reward other than the deep assurance that our Heavenly Father swells with delight when we do so.

Stepping up to help others requires Thought; Consideration; Planning; Time; Effort & Energy! It’s an investment – it costs. Let’s face it – if it was easy, everyone would do it!

At a time when “Battle Fatigue” is rife in the Body of Christ, we are challenged to understand that we need to be concerned for and watchful over the church family God has placed around us. Do we recognise when someone is tired? More importantly, do we stop to consider that we are called to be part of the solution? Just as Aaron & Hur held Moses’ arms aloft in the heat of battle, we too can assist in the challenges affecting others. Whose arms are you lifting up?

When Rebekah offered to water the camels in Abraham’s servants care, she went the extra mile. In giving, she was watering her own destiny.. “Give, and it will come back to you, good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over..” Helping others is an opportunity. Do you finish what you start?

Sometimes we need to understand that perseverance is required – helping can prove challenging in certain instances, and we need to be determined, despite the seeming obstacles. Remember the 4 men who carried the paralytic man on the stretcher to Jesus, via the rooftops? How is your perseverance? Who are you engaged in carrying right now?

When the Good Samaritan helped the man on the road to Jericho, he saw helping as an opportunity, not an inconvenience. The story says that the Samaritan “took pity”. He was “moved” with compassion. Compassion requires action. Seeing requires doing. Helping others is not about whether they deserve it or not, it’s about responding where God positions us. The Samaritan cared enough not to pass by another person in need. How much do we care? Care is active, not passive.

So, as the Body of Christ, the challenge has been laid

Do we attend church just out of a need to receive something? If so, we are not true church. True church always brings something – without you, this church should be poorer. There are those who need your help today – ask Father to show you the way and be a part of building His Kingdom, both within Riviera Life, and in our wider communities.

I LOVE PEOPLE AND ENJOY HELPING THEM’

Before we can love others, we must receive God’s love, says the New York Times “best seller

Do you really know that God loves you? It’s one thing to understand that God is love and he loves you, but it’s another to know and experience his love personally. What we believe begins as a thought/ and as Proverbs 23:7 says, “As a man thinks in his heart, so is he.” I like to say it this way: Where the mind goes, the man follows.

If you need to get a deeper revelation of God’s love for you, a good place to start is to meditate on this truth: God loves me unconditionally.

Many years ago when 1 was preparing to teach my first public message, I felt like God was speaking to my heart to tell people he loves them. At first, 1 wasn’t excited about this because it seemed too simple, so 1 told God, “They already know that And 1 don’t want to just teach a little Sunday school lesson.”-But God showed me that many people don’t really know how much he loves them, because if they did, they would act a lot differently than they do.

God’s love is amazing. First John 4:16 says God is love. And verse 18 adds, “There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear.” God’s love can remove fear from your life. It’s a medicine that can heal every wound in your soul: a broken heart, the pain of rejection or abandonment or any other hurt you’ve experienced.

Romans 8:37 says, “We are more than conquerors through him who loved us.” When you really know the love of God, you don’t have to be afraid of making a mistake; you can step out boldly in faith to do whatever he’s calling you to do. You know who you are in Christ and have confidence that you can do whatever you need to do in life through him.

God loves you on purpose. He didn’t get stuck with you – he chose you! Ephesians 1:4 says that, “In his love he chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless in his sight, even above reproach, before him in love.”

When you know God loves you, you feel valuable, accepted and that you have a purpose. You know your sins are forgiven and you are free from guilt and condemnation. And no matter what you’ve done, you can have a new beginning in Christ.

I want to encourage you to be determined to know and receive God’s love for you. Study Scriptures about God’s love and make them personal confessions you can declare over your life. Look at yourself in the mirror and say out loud, “God loves me! He chose me, actually picked me out for himself to have a personal relationship with him. I am more than-a conqueror in Christ because he loves me, and his perfect love casts fear out of my life.” Like 1 said before, the most important thing to God is that we love each other unconditionally. Love is not a theory or a gooey feeling; it’s about how you treat people. And we start loving people with our thoughts. How do you think about people?

If you’re going to walk in love, you have to set your mind and keep it set that | you’re going to walk in love. Our natural tendency is to be selfish, but the solution to overcoming a selfish, self-centred life is to love aggressively. Start with your thoughts and make this your confession: “1 love people and I enjoy helping them.”

I’ve found that when I’m focusing on others and how I can bless them, I’m more peaceful and have more joy. Make it your business to put a smile on someone’s face and do something that makes someone’s life better every day. Trust God to take care of you. If you stay busy trying to help others, you won’t have time to worry about yourself. And you’ll enjoy living a life of love.

THE BLESSING OF GOD

Reading  Hebrews 6

Text             vv13-15

 Introduction

GOD’S DESIGN:It can be rightly argued and stated that it is the will of God that the child of God should discover His will and intention for life and existence.  One needs to be very clear and sure in relation to this matter. It is an indisputable fact, as far as God is concerned, that He wants His people to be fully aware of His great design for living. God’s Word brings a basic understanding of the entire and full expression of God’s plan and purpose.  One of the main reasons for the Scriptures is to open up the mind and heart of the believer to what God requires of and what He intends to do for His people.

REALIZATION: Within this knowledge of His will is the sure and certain conviction that it is the desire and purpose of God to ‘ bless His people.’  This truth and assurance must come through to the Church, to its ministry and to the whole body..  The revelation must come to a place of full realization.  The unveiling of God’s Word is that God is the ‘Blessed God ‘ and that it is His objective to bless His new creation with untold blessings.. He wants the world at large to know what He thinks about those who truly belong to Him.

The order and procedure is simply this: to bless His offspring in order that such should be made a blessing.  This is illustrated and vouchsafed in God’s dealings with Abraham –  c.f. Genesis12:.2 .  Abraham was not to be a Dead Sea but a free, outgoing river, flowing in every direction, bringing blessing universally.

PRINCIPLE: The principle and pattern is set clearly out in the divine pages of truth.  There is no need to be in the dark or in doubt concerning it.  It comes out  over, again and again..

  • It is seen originally  – Genesis 1:28-30 . Nothing was spared in giving the best to man at the outset.  Adam was blessed of God mightily in his beginnings.  It was the intention of God to continually to do so.  God does not change His mind.  Unfortunately, man originally in his sinful act lost sight of the nature and will of God and allowed himself to be deceived and perverted by the evil one.  It was with deep regret and sorrow that God had to measure out a curse.  That is always the price. of sin. He failed the covenant agreement.
  • It is seen redemptively and eternally in Jesus Christ.  There is no doubt that Jesus. Christ is the turning point with regard to mankind and the blessing of God.  The great reason for the sending of Jesus Christ and His work was to remove the curse of sin and to institute a divine of blessing. In life, death,. resurrection, ascension and returning glory, He is the mediator of divine blessing.  Note the purpose of Christ’s resurrection – Acts 3:26 .  When a person is born again, in and through Christ, that person is part of Christ’s Family.  It is God the Father’s intention to bless all those who are in Christ Jesus.  See the important connection in the NT of. being ‘ in Christ.’

                    ” Blessings abound where’er He reigns;

                      The prisoner leaps to lose his chains;

                      The weary find eternal rest;

And all the sons of want are blest In what ways does the Lord will to bless His people. Let us consider it in the light of Abraham.

1/.  PERSONALLY  v14

It was God who said : ” Surely blessing I WILL bless THEE.”  He gave assurance and went on record on this matter indicating to this man that as a person and as an individual being that he would receive divine blessing.  God was to bless him as a person.  The whole personality of Abraham was going to be enriched and enhanced by reason of this act of God.  God wasn’t going to stunt and dwarf him as one of His creatures but expand all his powers and potential.  He was not to become inhibited and knotted up within. his person but opened up with God’s blessing.

  • All the fears and phobias would be effectively dealt with so that he would be a man of sterling, faith and quality.  All his hatreds and bitterness would be eliminated so that he would be a man of glorious love and affection. All his inward deceits would be sorted out so that he could emerged a .true man through and through; one in whom there was no guile. He would be able to live with himself, conscious of the fact of the favour of God on him as a person. Mind, heart and will would know a constant refreshing and renewing from God so that he would be able to be revealed as a whole and complete person.  There would be no-thing half-developed.
  • God got through to Abraham first of all in terms of blessing, that is in the whole character of his person.  Abraham allowed that divine blessing to shape and mold his thoughts, emotions and actions.  It aided him in living out his life in conformity with the will of God.   See the prayer of Jabez – 1 Chron.4:lO ‘ bless me indeed ‘.

2/.  SPIRITUALLY.

One of the main areas in which Abraham enjoyed God’s blessing was in the realm of divine revelation.  He knew what it was to be ‘the friend of God ‘ and stood in the intimate counsels of heaven. ‘ He ‘knew what was on in relation to his own life and the things all around him.  The blessing of God was to open up his mind to the intentions and action of God in earthly affairs.  His life was to be no meaningless existence, minus true conviction and purpose.  That revelation uncovered many choice factors to his spirit. God gave promise to him that enriched his whole spiritual life. Revelation given in relation

  • to the family.  He was to be blessed with his own son at an extraordinary time in Sarai’s and his own life.  God gave the promised blessing of a son – Genesis15-17  and in spirit prior to the birth of the child he was blessed with the spirit of faith – Romans 4.20 .  The revelation was not wasted on him.  Subsequent history would declare that here was a man who knew what it was to receive blessing on the family unit.
  • to the nation.  The revelation went much further than his own household; he would be the founding father of a great nation.  There would be multiplication on a grand scale that would bring into being the birth of a renowned nation. The promise was “I will make of thee a great nation “Genesis 12.2 .  There was the revelation of a nation and revelation to proceed through the nation through many famous,. God-blessed men.  The birth of the scriptures came by this God-anointed people.

Illustration :  Growth : Gen.48:17 “multiply like fishes.2  1 cod 9 million eggs

  • to the whole world.  There was no limit to it at all “In thee shall all the families of the earth be blessed.”  This certainly must have blessed the spirit of Abraham.  To think that his life in its blessing would affect the world of humanity.  God was helping him to think and be big in himself. The spirit of Abraham would be perfectly revealed later in the person of Jesus Christ born of Israel and the Abrahamic line, whose life and ministry would penetrate and influence the world of nations.  Abraham would not be forgotten.

 3/. MATERIALLY.

The multiplication included material prosperity..  God so blessed Abraham that he was a man of great material substance.  God willed in the blessing to make him a man of material means.( The same could be said with regard to Israel ).  In Genesis 13.2 it declares “And Abram was very rich in cattle, in silver, and in gold “  see also v6.   Note that he had his principles in relation to getting wealth – Genesis 14:21-24.  He certainly did not place a priority on his material assets.

There is no reason why a believer cannot be blessed on the material front.  The God who created the person created the world of material things to be enjoyed.  There ‘is no earthly or heavenly reason why the believer should not be blessed with riches of an earthly kind.  Whilst one does not preach a prosperity gospel, there is no lawful or spiritual reason why Christians should not be blessed with material substance.

The rule of life should certainly be Matt.6:33.Greek word ‘ added ‘ – ‘ prostithemi ‘ -which means to add, superadd, adjoin.  There is littlle doubt that God can bestow in this kind of manner.  He can both add and super add on this front.  Of course, the Christian knows contentment whatever his earthly lot, but there is no reason why he should not have more than enough.

J. Shelbourne     “May God embarrass you with His generosity.”

There is indication that Abraham was not a mean, rich man.  He was kind and hospitable. He allowed Lot to make first choice and did not grasp for things.  He entertained the angels even though they appeared to be but strangers.  The steward Eliezer found it a pleasure. to work for and be true to him. He was a man who gave and received in abundance –  cf. Luke 6:38 .

4/.  PHYSICALLY

God blessed this man in a physical way. He knew the blessing of preservation, from those who may well have had evil designs upon his life.  On at least two recorded occasions he is wonderfully preserved. God intervened to safeguard the life of His servant.  He vouchsafed a promise to him when the threat of retaliation by an adversary was close at hand – Genesis15: l  “After these things the word of the Lord came, unto Abram in a vision saying, ‘ Fear not, Abram, ‘I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward.’

When Abraham concluded his life it was when he had had a full life that had been greatly blessed – Genesis 25:7, 8 “Then Abraham gave up the ghost, and died in a good old age, an old man, full of year’s; and was gathered to his people.”  Newberry – ‘ full of years ‘ – ‘ satisfied’. All his days were crowned with the fulness and faithfulness of God.  There is a need to take a positive outlook to one’s physical well-being – c.f. 3 John.v2: 1 “Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.”  Note Deuteronomy.34:7.

5/.  ETERNALLY.

As far as Abraham was and is concerned, the blessing of God did not terminate at death The temporal blessing was but a forerunner of bigger and more lasting considerations   They were but the foretaste of much more to be known and enjoyed.  His eyes were not focussed and fixed on the passing earthly things.  He knew that there were blessings that outstripped and outlasted anything he could behold below.  The bigger prize was, ever on view “For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God” – – Hebrews 11: 10

The blessing of God upon him was of’ a timeless order, exceeding anything that this world could reveal or express.  The eternal world was before him.   The eternal God was his blesser and there were blessings of an eternal character yet to be revealed and experienced – 1 Cointhians.2:9, 10.  Death did not extinguish this flame of spiritual hope and assurance.

CONCLUSION

  • God expects us to believe and behave in such a way that He can bestow His blessing in and through Christ upon us.
  • His grace and favour is with us and He wants us to reign in life. No good will He wit-hold.
  • The only person that hinders you from being blessed by God is yourself. God bless you.

AN AWESOME GOD

Nahum 1

The special messenger of the Lord, Nahum, portrays God as awesome. His descriptive speech in vv2-6 reveals what a great, illustrious and powerful God He is. No one should underestimate His person, presence, attributes, abilities and glory. He appears majestic and He is to be reverenced and given due respect. In this section He makes known so many things and as they are seen and assessed together make known the wonder of Israel’s God, the Almighty.

1/. HE IS ABLE TO DEAL WITH ALL OPPOSITIONS – vv2,12,13

God is not overwhelmed or intimidated by the strength and number of the opposition. It does not matter what the size of it is. He can and does reduce it to utter impotence and desolation. There is no one that can stand against Him and have any hope of success. This is a comfort to those who have Him as God in life but a real threat and fear to others that defy Him.

2/. HE IS ABLE TO MANIFEST HIS SOVEREIGN POWER – v3

The prophet affirms that ‘His power is great.’ There is no limit to what He can do. It can be measured against every contingency and emergency and is never found wanting. His power is equal to any demand at anytime. Infinite and all power belong to Him as the prophet Isaiah reveals in chapter 40. He not only has the ability to create in an infinite manner, He is able to sustain all that he has created. He does not have to wax strong and neither does His power wane. It is a consistent factor and He shows it in awesome manner.

3/. HE IS ABLE ADMINISTER JUSTICE -v3

The point is made that ‘He never lets the guilty go unpunished.’ This reveals Him as the perfect Judge and that He possesses understanding in relation to all of His creatures and observes their conduct. No one can pursue a course of evil and get away with it. He brings to account and if one is found guilty then He will take the right measures to deal with such. How awesome is this fact!

4/. HE IS ABLE TO COMMAND AND CONTROL NATURE vv3-6

All of creation without is subject to His law of command and responds to His presence and decrees. The whirlwind and storm, oceans and rivers, forests, hills and mountains stand in awe of Him and acknowledge His majesty and authority.

CONCLUSION

The prophet assures that this is an excellent factor to consider because it is a blessing to those who have placed their pure faith and trust in Him -vv7, 8. This awesome God becomes a strong refuge and cover for those who love, know and serve Him. They do not have the wrong kind of fear that produces terror but the divine fear that produces trust and security.

MISSIONS

“A world Christian isn’t better than other Christians. But by God’s grace, they have made a discovery so important that life can never be the same again. World Christians are day-to-day disciples for whom Christ’s global cause has become the integrating, overriding priority for all that He has for them. Like disciples should, they actively investigate all that their master’s great commission means. Then they act on what they learn” David Bryant
