STAINED GLASS SAINTS

“It is God himself who has made us what we are and given us new lives from Christ Jesus; and long ages ago he planned that we should spend these lives in helping others” – Ephesians 2:10 (LB)

“You may be the only picture of Jesus someone will ever see.” This commonly heard statement is true, and the work of the Holy Spirit within us is to draw that picture of Jesus out of us until people see it face-to-face.

The problem occurs when we begin to insist that everyone must look exactly the same, that Jesus-in-you should look exactly like Jesus-in-me.

God loves variety and created each of us with different shapes, interests, and personalities, yet, just as all humans have foundational features, such as a common blood system, we all reflect the same Creator.

In Jesus, we share a common blood system – the cleansing, renewing blood of Christ – but the Jesus-in-me may look different than the Jesus-in-you.

To see it another way, we are like stained glass, and our different personalities reflect God’s light in a variety of colors and patterns. He shaped us so there would be no duplication, so none of us would have the exact same mix as another, making us each unique.

“It is God himself who has made us what we are and given us new lives from Christ Jesus; and long ages ago he planned that we should spend these lives in helping others” – Ephesians 2:10 LB.

Each of us is a unique, one-of-a-kind, never to be repeated expression of Christ. Steve Pettit says, “There is a sacramental nature to our particular personalities and, within the family, the God-given freedom to be who we were created to be.”

With that also comes the God-given responsibility of love to look out for one another, to know and be known, to love and be loved, and to encourage each other to reach our fullest expressions of Christ-in-us.

Our objective-in-Jesus is to help each other become the best picture of Jesus we can be.

THE POWERFUL VOICE OF REPENTANCE

Steve Hill, the evangelist who led the Brownsville Revival in the 199Os, went to be with the Lord in March. His ministry impacted millions of people reports Matthew Murray Hard-hitting preacher Steve Hill, famed for his role in the Brownsville Revival, died after a long battle with cancer on March 9. Hill, who died aged 60, was a guest speaker at Brownsville Assemblies of God Church in Pensacola, Florida, on Father’s Day I995. After his sermon, the power of the Holy Spirit moved and a five-year revival began, which an estimated 4.5 million people attended from all parts of the world.

Services were held six nights each week, and Hill’s passionate, no-nonsense sermons on repentance became the major focus of the revival as hundreds ran to the altars and became Christians each night.

After leaving Pensacola in 2OOO, Hill formed his own church ‘Heartland Fellowship’ in Dallas, Texas, and continued to travel worldwide, holding gospel crusades and reaching thousands through his TV ministry and books.

Hill — a former drug addict who was rehabilitated through the Teen Challenge programme — leaves a wife, Jeri, and three children, Ryan, Shelby and Kelsey.

At his memorial service held a week after his death, thousands packed into the Brownsville church to pay tribute to the preacher.

Pastor John Kilpatrick, Hill’s close friend and co-leader in the revival, said: “My heart is broken as I prepare to say a final goodbye to my best friend Steve Hill. His was the most powerful voice of repentance that I have ever heard. I feel an eerie, deafening silence knowing that he is no longer with us. It is a great loss for the body of Christ but especially for his wife, Jeri, and his family. I will always love you, Steve, and I will miss you greatly.”

Dr Michael Brown, who led the Brownsville Ministry School, highlighted Hill’s obvious passion for evangelism.

He said, “l will never forget the years we had together in Brownsville, praying for people every night until we were ready to drop, looking into his reddened eyes (either from weeping or from lack of sleep, or both) and hearing him urge
sinners to come running to the altar in repentance.

“Twice every year, Brownsville would hold a pastors‘ conference, and the crowds would be even larger, as 1,5OO leaders attended the meetings. But Steve found those weeks difficult, since, as much as he loved those pastors and their spouses, he wanted to reach the lost and backslidden. That was what moved him day and night.

“Even as he battled cancer, Steve began to reach out through the Internet to the Muslim world — he became consumed with a vision to reach them ~ and he was thrilled to receive e—mails from former Muslims, newly saved through this gospel outreach. He also launched the Prodigals Only website, and he was staggered by the glorious reports he received. That was my friend Steve Hill, an evangelist to the core of his being.”

Elim General Superintendent John Glass also paid tribute to Hill, saying he saw first-hand the impact of his ministry.

He said, “Steve was the catalyst for the Pensacola Revival and, ministering night after night for a prolonged period, was the means of bringing many people to Christ and multitudes re-committing themselves to the Lord.

“l was among the many who witnessed firsthand the fruits of this remarkable period of God’s grace. One remarkable event was when a lady from my church in Kilsyth took her unsaved partner to the meetings and, as he thought, hid from view in the gallery.

“When he did not respond to the appeal, Steve pointed straight up to him with words to the effect of, ‘How is it you have travelled thousands of miles to these meetings and cannot make the final few yards to the altar?‘ He gave his life to Christ that night and returned to Scotland a transformed man.”

LOOSE CONNECTIONS
Taken from Senior Life Ministries

Missionary Herbert Jackson and his family had just arrived on the mission field and were assigned a car that wouldn’t start without a push. So he devised a plan. He went to the school near his home, got permission to take some of the students out of class, and had them push his car off. Away from home, he would endeavour to park on a hill or leave the engine .

This for two years, when the Jackson family was forced to leave because of ill health and a new missionary came to take over their work. He was telling the new missionary about the problem with the car.

“Dr. Jackson,” the missionary explained as he looked under the hood, “I believe the only trouble is this loose cable.” He gave the cable a twist, then got in and started the car right up. Jackson was astonished… after two years of pushing and coasting, only a loose connection kept him from having a properly functioning car.

Many times in the Christian life, it’s the smallest things that keep us from experiencing God to the fullest. Whether it be an old habit or a reluctance to obey God, it can cause you to miss out on God’s best. Don’t live life with a loose cable. Submit to God and experience His best for you!

PRAYER CHALLENGE

Pray now and ask God to show you the ‘loose cables’ in your life that are keeping you from experiencing Him to the fullest.

PREACHING

Some advice given by John Maxwell’s Professor and tutor was referred to as: “The 4 Unpardonable sins of a Communicator” and is worthy to be remembered by every preacher. They are: Being unprepared, uncommitted, uninteresting and uncomfortable.
In addition, I have found the following five things very helpful:

1/. GOOD CONVICTION

Preaching is not the ability to give a talk, but a Call to deliver a message. There are salesmen that sell and salesmen that compel. The difference is conviction. Paul said “Woe is me if I preach not the Gospel,” in other words, “I have got to do this!” Good preachers KNOW they are dealing in matters of eternity. That produces PASSION and soberness. Alexander Solzhenitsyn said “One word of truth outweighs the whole world – the truth is more powerful than tanks.”

Maxwell: “You don’t have to be gorgeous, a genius, or a masterful orator to possess presence and connect with others. You just need to be positive, believe in yourself and focus on others.”

This is often something we struggle with and for some – all their lives. Those who conquer low self-image and Inner insecurities become better communicators. Knowing you are CALLED to preach is the starting point for doing it well.

2/. GOOD PREPARATION

Bill Hybels used to say that every one minute of a sermon takes one hour of preparation. There are no shortcuts to a good message. Preparation strengthens confidence and takes two man areas; the preacher and the preach.

The better the preacher is the better the sermon is. If you’re empty – the sermon won’t be full. When you preach – you pour out. What’s not in can’t come out. Preachers are responsible for filling themselves – none of us are ever full enough and FRESHNESS is not preservable! It must be maintained. The “flame of the gift of God within you” DOES NOT FAN ITSELF.

There’s not much worse that receiving the pour out from a stagnant, reluctant or worn-out preacher. Preaching requires ENERGY so if you going to preach week after week you have to learn from DRAINS YOU and what FILLS YOU and plug any energy leaks. Paul told Timothy “Watch your LIFE and DOCTRINE closely…”

Every message you preach is flavoured by your life up till now, your experiences, good & bad, your studying and your listenings. It’s vital that a preacher reads much. Charles Spurgeon told Alexander Whyte: “Sell your bed if need be, to buy books”. Or Martin Lloyd Jones would be sitting on a beach reading deep theology whilst his children paddled in the surf. American President Harry Truman had read 3,000 books by the time he was 14! Every preacher becomes what they are by the input they receive. Preachers must love the Word and learn to stew in it and wait for revelation from it. When it comes to the WORD, God has no more to give but we have more to learn.

3/. GOOD DELIVERY

A bad delivery can ruin a great sermon and a great delivery can rescue a bad sermon! Always be in LEARNING mode. Watch, observe, and listen to communicators. Preachers are not only HEARD – they are SEEN and it may surprise you to know that it is what people SEE that has the greatest communication factor during a Preach. Psychologist Albert Mehravian informs us that studies show when you preach 7% of the communication comes from your words, 38% from your voice and 55% from your facial expressions. In other words the biggest communication during a preach is non-verbal! People are seeing more than they’re hearing which is why we need to work on our delivery. You can spend hours preparing your notes, but have 30-40 minutes to present it and on many occasions that will be a first and only opportunity.

If you preach a message several times or the same theme several times, be sure to understand the principle of “the illusion of the first time;” always assume, there may be ONE person present for whom it is and they must not experience a weak presentation simply because others may have heard before.

4/. GOOD CONNECTION

Effective communication only occurs when the Speaker CONNECTS with the Listener. Getting the words out of your mouth is not the goal. The goal Is to get your words into the hearts of the listeners. Although ultimately we know it’s the work of the Holy Spirit, don’t use that as a cop out. Boring people to death does not assist the Holy Spirit! Our listeners today have built-in remote controls which enable them to switch off even though they look like they’re listening! People don’t listen because of your title but because they’re interested, so we must craft words and use illustrations to capture and hold attention.

5. GOOD APPLICATION

Every sermon should be capable of being expressed in one simple sentence. A sermon is the embodiment, development and full statement of that one significant thought. You must know it and what you want the message to achieve. There’s some debate today about Exposition versus Application but there’s no competition – it’s both.

As A W Tozer wrote, “There is scarcely anything so dull and meaningless as Bible doctrine taught for its own sake. Truth divorced from life is not truth in its Biblical sense… Theological truth is useless until it is obeyed. The purpose behind all doctrine is to secure moral action.” A Preacher is not merely filling a spot in a meeting, but working for transformation in partnership with the Almighty and so every message must be relevant and require some response.

Even in a high-tech age of multimedia, there’ s still nothing that can move the heart like an anointed preacher of truth burning with the fire of God and Paul’s advice to Timothy still stands today: “PREACH THE WORD”!

HIGHWAY TO HEAVEN

“An highway shall be there, and a way’ Isaiah 35:8

An eighteenth-century military leader turned the rough track a highland glen into a firm highway. What was impassable in winter became an all-weather road. This beneficial act was commemorated in verse thus:-
‘Had you seen these roads afore they were made, You’d go down on your knees And bless General Wade”. .
Isaiah’s highway is fulfilled in the life and ministry of Him who said of Himself, “l am the WAY” (John 14:6), not to an earthly Zion, but to “the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem” (Heb 12:22).

IT IS A SURE WAY. The simplest of believers cannot miss it.“Way-faring man, though fools, shall not err therein”.

IT IS A SAFE WAY. The ravenous beasts of evil, including the devil himself “as a roaring lion” will not impede our progress. When we walk with God we walk in safety.

IT IS A SACRED WAY. “The way of holiness”. Only the redeemed “the ransomed of the Lord” can tread it. lt leads to Glory – and we enjoy glory as we sing our way along.

DEALING WITH THE DILEMMA

According to an old legend, a man became lost in his travels and wandered into a bed of quicksand. Confucius saw the man’s predicament and said, “It is evident that men should stay out of places such as this.” Next, Buddha observed the situation and said, “Let that man’s plight be a lesson to the rest of the world.” Then Muhammad came by and said to the sinking man, “Alas, it is the will of God.” Finally, Jesus appeared. “Take my hand, brother,” he said, “and I will save you.”

A HEALING REVELATION
Lisa Jo Cox

“And he began to say to them, “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing” – Luke 4:21
A s I sat in the pew listening to the pastor became increasingly difficult. I continued to push back scenes from that horrible day as I prayed for God to help me listen to the message.
It had only been a few weeks since the accident and, honestly I was exhausted. I tried to focus, but flashes from that day kept pressing in, when Max, my husband of just two years, was killed in a car accident. I didn’t understand why God had allowed it, but I knew I was still in control.
I continued to try to listen as I held my ten-month-old sleeping daughter, Breeanna, and prayed for peace from the terrible memories.

As I sat praying, those memories were replaced with a nudging to open my Bible to the sixteenth chapter of the book of Luke. I wasn’t sure what l would find in the book of Luke as I had read it many times. Nevertheless, I decided there must be something that wanted me to see at that ‘moment so I flipped through the pages the book of Luke.
I cried and laughed when in the right margin beside Luke my husband’s handwriting were the words, “I Love You! Max

A DREAM COME TRUE

Norman Vincent Peale

Persistence made it happen for a young woman with all the odds stacked against her.
A big thought can be one of the strongest forces in the world. I was impressed with that idea all over again when I heard the story of Mary Crowe.

Young Mary was washing her father’s overalls one day when the big thought struck her. ‘ ‘
In her mind she saw herself graduating from college in cap and gown, accepting her diploma, ready to start a career.

Since Mary came from a low-income family, her dream seemed out of sight. There would never be enough money to send Mary to college. Besides, no member of her family had ever gone to college.

But Mary held on to that thought. In secondary school she studied hard, and spoke freely of her dream to teachers and friends. When her final day at school came, her principal called her into his office.

‘I have an envelope for you,’ he said.

It contained a scholarship to a nearby college. The power of a thought had produced its first dividend. But the scholarship could cover only part of her college expenses. Mary took every part-time job she could find and became a waitress, a housemaid, a cook.

Mary’s dream came true when she graduated from college. Then she took a course in insurance. When she presented herself to a local insurance company for a job, she was turned down. She applied again. The answer was no. She kept going back until the manager, to get rid of her, snapped. ‘All right, here’s a rate book and a desk.

But I can’t give you a drawing account “or any Secretarial help. Twenty-five years later Mary Crowe’s associates in that company gathered at a special dinner in her honour, recognizing her for her outstanding achievements as an insurance saleswoman.

‘Each of us is constantly in a state of becoming,’ she said, giving her formula for success. ‘Arid through enthusiasm, prayer and faith you can become what you think. Not that your life will be without problems. But along the way problems will be over- come. Ask and believe; dream and believe; work and believe.’

HAVE THE RIGHT FOUNDATION FOR LIFE
Taken from Senior Life Ministries

The Leaning Tower of Pisa is slowly leaning more and more. Scientists travel yearly to measure the slow descent. They report that the 179-foot tower moves about a twentieth of an inch every year, and is now 17 feet out of plumb. In fact, if it hadn’t been for counterweights installed, bells removed from the tower, and safety cables harnessed, most believe it would have fallen years ago.

Significantly, the word pisa in Italian actually means “marshy land,” an interesting thing to consider when you think about the fact that the foundation of the tower is only 10 feet deep. It’s no wonder, then, that the building is living on borrowed time.

When a foundation is shallow, the building will collapse. And what’s true in architecture is also true in our spiritual lives. When we have a shallow spiritual foundation that doesn’t dig deep into the ground, our spirituality will waiver – faltering when hard times hit.

If you want to have a faith that’s unshakeable, build your life’s foundation on the person of Jesus Christ. Because while the world may shift and sway, our spiritual foundation can remain strong when we make Jesus Christ the basis of everything we do!

PRAYER CHALLENGE

Pray and ask God to help you make Jesus central in every aspect of your life.
