SACRED SONGS
Jesus the name High Over All
This is one of those hymns which, as Dr. Telford remarks, has “stamped itself deep in the religious life of Methodism.” Few hymns have been more quoted by Methodist ministers in their dying hours than this, especially the last stanza. But perhaps the youngest “preacher” that ever made use of it tenderly and effectively in the dying hour is described in the following incident, which serves also to show how the early Methodists taught such hymns as this to their children at home and in Sunday Schools:
By a distressing accident a little girl only seven years of age was severely burned and had to be taken to a hospital in London. At a Methodist Sunday school she had learned to love and to sing the hymn beginning, “Jesus, the name high over all.” On the last night of her life all the patients were quiet in the ward where she lay, and nothing was heard but the tick and strike of the clock, when suddenly the little sufferer broke the silence by sweetly singing…from her favourite hymn…Then silence reigned again in the room, and for some time, as before, only the ticking of the clock was heard when the melodious voice of the little sufferer again broke the silence and many other sufferers in the room heard her singing softly: “Happy, if with my latest breath I may but gasp his name”…
And with that the little preacher’s voice was indeed hushed in death, but not until many had heard, in the words of this tender song as she so sweetly sang it, a gospel message never to be forgotten.
1/. Jesus! the Name high over all, In hell or earth or sky;
Angels and men before it fall, And devils fear and fly.
2/. Jesus! the Name to sinners dear, The Name to sinners giv’n;
It scatters all their guilty fear, It turns their hell to Heav’n.
3/. Jesus! the prisoner’s fetters breaks, And bruises Satan’s head;
Power into strengthless souls it speaks, And life into the dead.
4/. O that mankind might taste and see The riches of His grace!
The arms of love that compass me Would all the world embrace.
5/. O that my Jesu’s heavenly charms Might every bosom move!
Fly, sinners, fly into those arms Of everlasting love.
6/. Thee I shall constantly proclaim, Though earth and hell oppose;
Bold to confess Thy glorious Name Before a world of foes.
7/. His only righteousness I show, His saving grace proclaim;
’Tis all my business here below To cry “Behold the Lamb!”
8/. Happy, if with my latest breath I may but gasp His Name,
Preach Him to all and cry in death, “Behold, behold the Lamb!”

DAILY MEDITATIONS
AN ANGEL’S MESSAGE – Matthew 28: 1-15
Throughout the Bible we read of angels being sent with very special messages to people with news of great significance to them in their situation. It happened on the day of Christ’s resurrection. When the womenfolk arrived at the tomb they were in for quite a shock. The stone that presented an obstacle to them had been rolled away. There was no longer a problem because God had attended to it. The Good News was from the divine herald: “He isn’t here” –v6. A new day had dawned with the testimony that Christ had vacated the tomb and was very much alive.
This truth had to be registered in their minds and become a dynamic factor within their lives and ministries in the forthcoming days. The emphasis came: “Remember, I have told you” – v7. This main truth was to be fully applied so that it would make an essential difference to both belief and behaviour. During the next forty days Christ committed Himself to this task in making sure they knew He was alive forevermore – Acts 1: 1-3. They were not to be left in any doubt on this. He was alive and was with them.
Be assured, Christ is alive today and is in control of Christianity. Real Christianity will express this in a powerful and dynamic manner. The risen Christ is to be resident in every genuine Christian believer, making His presence, power and purposes known. Paul could say: “Christ liveth in me” – Galatians 2: 20. It is only through the indwelling, living Christ that you can truly demonstrate the worth and wealth of Christ. He comes to share the reality and fullness of Himself in those that look to His indwelling and input. He is yours today!
