SACRED SONGS

Jesus the name High Over All

This is one of those hymns which, as Dr. Telford remarks, has “stamped itself deep in the religious life of Methodism.” Few hymns have been more quoted by Methodist ministers in their dying hours than this, especially the last stanza. But perhaps the youngest “preacher” that ever made use of it tenderly and effectively in the dying hour is described in the following incident, which serves also to show how the early Methodists taught such hymns as this to their children at home and in Sunday Schools:

By a distressing accident a little girl only seven years of age was severely burned and had to be taken to a hospital in London. At a Methodist Sunday school she had learned to love and to sing the hymn beginning, “Jesus, the name high over all.” On the last night of her life all the patients were quiet in the ward where she lay, and nothing was heard but the tick and strike of the clock, when suddenly the little sufferer broke the silence by sweetly singing…from her favourite hymn…Then silence reigned again in the room, and for some time, as before, only the ticking of the clock was heard when the melodious voice of the little sufferer again broke the silence and many other sufferers in the room heard her singing softly: “Happy, if with my latest breath I may but gasp his name”…

And with that the little preacher’s voice was indeed hushed in death, but not until many had heard, in the words of this tender song as she so sweetly sang it, a gospel message never to be forgotten.

1/. Jesus! the Name high over all, In hell or earth or sky;
Angels and men before it fall, And devils fear and fly.

2/. Jesus! the Name to sinners dear, The Name to sinners giv’n;
It scatters all their guilty fear, It turns their hell to Heav’n.

3/. Jesus! the prisoner’s fetters breaks, And bruises Satan’s head;
Power into strengthless souls it speaks, And life into the dead.

4/. O that mankind might taste and see The riches of His grace!
The arms of love that compass me Would all the world embrace.

5/. O that my Jesu’s heavenly charms Might every bosom move!
Fly, sinners, fly into those arms Of everlasting love.

6/. Thee I shall constantly proclaim, Though earth and hell oppose;
Bold to confess Thy glorious Name Before a world of foes.

7/. His only righteousness I show, His saving grace proclaim;
’Tis all my business here below To cry “Behold the Lamb!”

8/. Happy, if with my latest breath I may but gasp His Name,
Preach Him to all and cry in death, “Behold, behold the Lamb!”

AN ANGEL’S MESSAGE – Matthew 28: 1-15

Throughout the Bible we read of angels being sent with very special messages to people with news of great significance to them in their situation. It happened on the day of Christ’s resurrection. When the womenfolk arrived at the tomb they were in for quite a shock.  The stone that presented an obstacle to them had been rolled away. There was no longer a problem because God had attended to it. The Good News was from the divine herald: “He isn’t here” –v6. A new day had dawned with the testimony that Christ had vacated the tomb and was very much alive.

This truth had to be registered in their minds and become a dynamic factor within their lives and ministries in the forthcoming days. The emphasis came: “Remember, I have told you” – v7. This main truth was to be fully applied so that it would make an essential difference to both belief and behaviour. During the next forty days Christ committed Himself to this task in making sure they knew He was alive forevermore – Acts 1: 1-3.  They were not to be left in any doubt on this. He was alive and was with them.

Be assured, Christ is alive today and is in control of Christianity. Real Christianity will express this in a powerful and dynamic manner. The risen Christ is to be resident in every genuine Christian believer, making His presence, power and purposes known. Paul could say: “Christ liveth in me” – Galatians 2: 20. It is only through the indwelling, living Christ that you can truly demonstrate the worth and wealth of Christ. He comes to share the reality and fullness of Himself in those that look to His indwelling and input. He is yours today!

SACRED SONGS

In the Cross be my Glory Ever

Fanny J. Crosby (1820-1915) was the author of over 8,500 gospel songs. Though blind at 6 weeks of age, Crosby began composing texts at age 6. She later became a teacher at the New York School for the Blind, where she was a student. A friend of several presidents, Crosby became one of the most important advocates for the cause of the blind in the United States.

This hymn first appeared in the collection Bright Jewels (1869), compiled by Bradbury, Doane, W.F. Sherwin and Chester G. Allen, at least two of whom were famous writers of gospel song tunes. Indeed, it was Doane who wrote the music and then gave it to Fanny Crosby to add the text—a practice that was not uncommon in their relationship.

UM Hymnal editor Carlton R. Young notes: “It is one of many texts by Crosby that combine vivid imagery (she was blinded in her childhood) and powerful biblical and evangelical metaphors: the Cross, a fountain of healing streams, free grace, the daily walk of faith, God’s pursuing love and mercy, Jesus, the Lamb of God, beyond the river of death—heaven with its golden streets—and rest for the post-Raptured souls.”

Though an instrument of cruel punishment and torture, the Cross is a source of a “healing stream” (stanza one) and a place where “the bright and morning star sheds its beams” on us (stanza two).

The famous evangelist Dwight L. Moody was said to have asked Crosby the following question toward the end of her life: “If you could have just one wish granted, what would it be?”

Moody expected her to ask for sight. Sensing this she is said to have replied, “If I could have one wish, I’d wish that I might continue blind the rest of my life.” Moody was taken back and asked, “How can you say that?” Crosby was said to have responded, “Because, after being blind for all these years, the first face I want to see now is the face of Jesus.”

1/. Jesus, keep me near the cross, There a precious fountain—
Free to all, a healing stream—Flows from Calv’ry’s mountain.

Refrain:
In the cross, in the cross, Be my glory ever;
Till my raptured soul shall find Rest beyond the river.

2/. Near the cross, a trembling soul, Love and Mercy found me;
There the bright and morning star Sheds its beams around me – refrain

3/. Near the cross! O Lamb of God, Bring its scenes before me;
Help me walk from day to day, With its shadows o’er me – refrain

4/. Near the cross I’ll watch and wait Hoping, trusting ever,
Till I reach the golden strand, Just beyond the river – refrain

QUOTES TO NOTE – THANKFUL

I don’t think you should spend your life praying for things, but I do believe you should thank God for what He’s given you… but I think the scripture teaches us that we can pray for our dreams, pray for the big things… he’s not a small God; this God is incredible. Joel Osteen

DAILY MEDITATIONS

GOD’S CONFIRMATION – Matthew 27: 32-66

When Christ was dying He really did look a victim and one that was seemingly friendless and forsaken. Although He was in personal spiritual victory throughout, yet He looked to be helpless. How easily He could have come down from the Cross and answered the taunts but He refused. In Hebrews 12: 2 we are told, “He endured the Cross.” The crowd called out for God’s vindication as to whether He was the Son of God. Christ had to wait for that, and it happened!

No sooner had he cried out His final words of accomplishment – v50, that God steps in and performs extraordinary things in confirmation. First and best of all, the veil in the Temple that separated the Holy of Holies from the Holy Place was split in two. The way into God’s Presence was now wide open for all to enter through the sacrifice of Christ. Creation added its witness with the shaking of the earth and other things took place. Those around suddenly changed their minds and said: “Surely this was the God’s Son” – v54.

God has given full evidence as to the identity and the work of Christ by the fact of His death. You can now place your full faith in His death and enjoy the benefit of knowing the intimate, rich fellowship of God. Now it is possible for you to draw nigh to God wholly pardoned and cleansed from sin by virtue of His death for you. His death was not in vain: it was to provide you with the opportunity of fellowship with God. Make the most of it!

THE DIVINE SIFTING

Amos  9

God makes very clear in v9 what His intentions are with what is going to occur in relation to His people. He is not in a negative state of mind and action as Israel is about to face a tremendous ordeal. In and through it He is going to perform and amazing work in relation to a certain group.  The object of His exercise in the proceedings is that he is going to perform a serious job of sifting with two principal factors in mind: one to discover and get rid of the rubbish and to save and secure that which is good and profitable. It can be seen that Jehovah is on a worthwhile enterprise and will see it through to a satisfactory conclusion.

1/. THE DIVINE SIFTING IS GOING TO OCCUR THROUGH SEVERE JUDGMENT – vv1-8

The word has it: ‘none will escape.’ No one will be able to hide or run away from this experience. The eyes of the Lord miss no one and nothing and all will be called upon to face the reality and severity of this ordeal.- v8. Sinners will have to confront this and even saints will be faced with the issue. The former have every reason to be afraid whilst the latter have every cause to have faith and trust in Jehovah. The judgment and the Judge will both have to be face and no one should be under any wrong illusions. Just as corn is thrown to the strong wind so that the chaff may be blown away so there is the fierce gale of wrath to blow. Another illustration is of gold and dross in the melting pot: both experience the heat and pressure.

2/. THE DIVINE SIFTING IS TO BE UNDERTAKEN WITH GREAT CARE – v9

The assurance is that not one good grain will fall to the earth and be lost. That which is worth something surfaces and is brought to view and is uniquely preserved. It can come through the trial knowing that in the end it will show its true character. The Lord knows all that are His and He is able to determine those who are precious and vital.

3/. THE DIVINE SIFTING IS TO BE WITH SUPREME OBJECTIVES – vv11-15

There are tremendous beneficial ends that the Lord has in mind for those who have been wonderfully preserved. The preservation is for a divine purpose. The Holy City is to be is to be divinely restored and the land is to be relieved of its curse and so are the people. They are going to enjoy to the full the maximum amount of blessings and prosperity the like that the Holy Land has never witnessed before.

CONCLUSION

It is important to be amongst those who are preserved in the sifting and not to perish. Psalm one reveals what the consummation of the righteous is.

DAILY MESSAGE

Never forget that the LORD has not only given you a mind to think with but also with capacity to meditate, also. It is a great gift to be able ponder and linger over truth and revelation that will help you produce a lifestyle that accords with His purpose and destiny. One great reason for the existence of the Holy Scriptures is that you may have something continually at hand that you can read and muse on which will shape your desires, belief system, character and make you an individual of true faith and confidence. This is not created or cultivated by self-philosophy but is formed by the inspiration of truth and knowledge that comes from God. He wants to see you become an outstanding person that He has planned you to b: to occupy and fulfil a great role in this life and prepare you for ruler-ship in the eternal one. Nothing could be wiser or better!

SACRED SONGS

Now I Belong to Jesus

The hymn, “Now I Belong To Jesus” written by Norman Clayton speaks about the truth of the mystical union that exists between Christ and the believer – Christ in the believer and the believer in Christ. Who can fathom the mystery of a mortal believer’s spirit being united with the divine Christ -a glorious relationship that begins for the believer at the moment of genuine response to the call of Christ and one that will last for eternity.

Norman Clayton was born on January 22, 1903 in Brooklyn, New York, the ninth of ten children. He was converted at the age of six in the South Brooklyn Gospel Church, where his mother had been a foundation member … and was church organist by the age of 12. He kept up the role of church organist for the rest of his life. Clayton’s profession was in the building industry, but he also created his own publishing house, Gospel Songs, which was later absorbed into the Rodeheaver Company. In 1942 he was working with Jack Wyrtzen’s Word of Life organization, providing music for both the radio broadcasts and crusade meetings. That same year Clayton wrote his most popular gospel song, words and music, “Now I Belong to Jesus.”

He has authored and composed numerous other fine gospel hymns, but “Now I Belong To Jesus” is still his most widely used song. This inspiring gospel song first appeared in Word of Life Melodies No. 1 in 1943. Mr. Clayton writes that one of his greatest thrills in life was hearing a 10 year old deaf girl sing his song at a camp for handicapped children.

Now I Belong To Jesus  Jesus, my Lord will love me forever,
From Him no pow’r of evil can sever, He gave His life to ransom my soul; Now I belong to Him;

Chorus
Now I belong to Jesus, Jesus belongs to me,
Not for the years of time alone, But for eternity.

Once I was lost in sin’s degradation, Jesus came down to bring me salvation,
Lifted me up from sorrow and shame, Now I belong to Him; Chorus

Joy floods my soul for Jesus has saved me, Freed me from sin that long had enslaved me
His precious blood, He came to redeem, Now I belong to Him; Chorus

DAILY MEDITATIONS

THE STAIN OF SIN – Matthew 27: 1-31

When people use the expression ‘My hands are clean’ they imply and indicate that they are not guilty of having done anything wrong and so they are not in any way stained by sin. The psalmist states that those who would have access and fellowship with God must possess ‘clean hands’ – Psalm 24: 4. This emphasizes that the person is free from transgression and wicked conduct. Hands are used to perform with and are symbolic of deeds either good or bad. The need is to make sure that the hands do not become dirty or defiled by any corrupt act.

Pilate, in the account, called for a bowl of clean water to wash his hands with and sought to give the impression by performing the washing ritual he would be clear of condemning Christ. What a foolish idea! It seems that he made his sin all the more pronounced! In no way could he be rid of the guilt by this measure. He was at fault because he failed to declare Christ without blame and should have released Him. As governor and judge his duty was to hold to the cause and claim of righteousness. He has gone down in history for this notorious evil deed.

Never can anyone free themselves from blame and shame by resorting to wrong procedures. There is only one way to be cleansed from sin and it is through repentance before God and a believing in the atoning sacrifice of Christ that sin can be forgiven and forgotten. Your hands only can be clean when you accept the means of cleansing that God has provided. Only the blood of Christ can cleanse – 1 John 1: 7. Having been washed, make sure you keep clean!

DAILY MESSAGE

You are called upon by the LORD to make continual progress within your Christian life. This means moving on from both your failures and successes. Do not spend endless time commiserating over the things you have done wrong and missed out on good things that would have served to great advantage. Neither must sit and gloat over your accomplishments, choice and beneficial they may have been.  The LORD has both desired and designed that you humbly move onward into much better and greater things. Let the past serve to teach and inspire, but do not live and linger there because your destiny is far more wonderful that you can imagine. Many have settled in the comfort zone and no longer aspire and live with greater objectives. This must not be so with regard to you. Your Father, from all eternity, looks to see you achieve all that he has planned, so neither disappoint Him or yourself!

SACRED SONGS

This is a hymn written by the inspiring hymnist Charles Wesley and has been sung continuously in the Christian Church and emphasizes wondrous truths of the Gospel. It commences highlight the immense love of Christ for the souls of men. To those who have discovered Him and His saving grace they know that “Other refuge have I known”. One needs no-one but Jesus and his salvation is perfect, complete and eternal. One can still sing it with fervour and faith and enjoy His reality!

Author: Charles Wesley

Charles Wesley, M.A. was the great hymn-writer of the Wesley family, perhaps, taking quantity and quality into consideration, the great hymn-writer of all ages. Charles Wesley was the youngest son and 18th child of Samuel and Susanna Wesley, and was born at Epworth Rectory, Dec. 18, 1707. In 1716 he went to Westminster School, being provided with a home and board by his elder brother Samuel, then usher at the school, until 1721, when he was elected King’s Scholar, and as such received his board and education free. In 1726 Charles Wesley was elected to a Westminster studentship at Christ Church, Oxford, where he took his degree in 1729, and became a college tutor. In the early part of the same year his religious impressions were much deepened.

Jesus, Lover of my Soul

1/. Jesus, lover of my soul,  Let me to thy bosom fly,  While the nearer waters roll, While the tempest still is high. Hide me, O my Savior, hide, Till the storm of life is past;  safe into the haven guide;  O receive my soul at last.

2/. Other refuge have I none, hangs my helpless soul on thee;  Leave, ah! leave me not alone,
still support and comfort me.  All my trust on thee is stayed, all my help from thee I bring;
Cover my defenceless head  with the shadow of thy wing.

3/. Thou, O Christ, art all I want,  More than all in thee I find;  Raise the fallen, cheer the faint,
Heal the sick, and lead the blind.  Just and holy is thy name, I am all unrighteousness;
False and full of sin I am;  Thou art full of truth and grace.

4/. Plenteous grace with thee is found,  Grace to cover all my sin;  Let the healing streams abound,
Make and keep me pure within.  Thou of life the fountain art, freely let me take of thee;
Spring thou up within my heart; Rise to all eternity.

DAILY MEDITATIONS

A TRUE TESTIMONY – Matthew 26:47-45

As the high priest challenged Christ as to His identity, He was not afraid to confess the truth as to His person and status. He was confronted with the words: “tell us whether you claim to be the Messiah, the Son of God” – v63.  “Yes,” Jesus said, “I Am,” – v64. There was no hesitancy in His reply. He was sure of His own personality and what His mission was. He had all the evidence in His own nature and public ministry. The witness that He gave on the occasion came out of a genuine, divine and truthful testimony. There is also the assertion from His lips that the future will make it obvious, too.

His life in word and deed had given complete justification to this unique role. The religious leaders refused to examine the facts and were utterly prejudiced in their own views. Christ fulfilled the prophetic Scriptures to the detail but they were not prepared to compare what God’s Word said with His life and service. Christ‘s testimony was true because it was in perfect agreement with all that the prophets had spoken and so He could be trusted and believed in. The problem here was, the opposition did not want to know the truth.

The Good News is, Christ can be wholly believed in. He is not only Israel’s but the world’s Messiah, and can be yours, too! He is who He claimed to be, so you can rest your hopes in Him to be your Saviour and Lord. The truth of Himself and His witness can become living truth in you.  You can know Him for who He is and what He has done. From this, you can bear a true testimony of His person and presence in your life so that He can also change others. Christ will justify Himself in your life as the Truth and cause you to be a true witness for Him.

DAILY MESSAGE

Live in faith today and do not allow fear, doubt or worry any entrance or foothold in your mind and heart. Ponder upon the rich legacy of promises the LORD has given in His Word for your meditation and fulfilment, so divine assurance will enter and take control over your thoughts and feelings. He has called you to be a big believer and to enjoy the vast assurances of His Word. Instead of being robbed by Satan, begin to possess all that the LORD has promised. Just as Israel had a Promised Land to inherit, so have you. You are not to exist subject to defeat or disaster but to discover that God your Father is well able to do for you all that he has guaranteed, so spend today in His Word and allow the Holy Sprit to quicken these promises to your being.

SACRED SONGS

This is a great hymn of desire and spiritual aspiration regularly sung in times past. Not much is known as to its author but the expressions certainly are deep expressions to know the LORD in a greater manner. One can just imagine that this could be based on the experience of Peter, James and John taken up the mount to be given a choice unveiling of Christ. For Peter, it was an unforgettable time that made genuine impact on his life. There are such moments for you as you reach out to the LORD.

Jesus, Lead me Up the Mountain

1/. Jesus, lead me up the mountain, Where the whitest robes are seen,
Where the saints can see the fountain, Where the pure are keeping clean.

Refrain

Bring me higher up the mountain Into fellowship with Thee,

In Thy light I see the fountain And the blood is cleansing me.

2/. Higher up, where light increases, Rich above all earthly good,
Where the life of sinning ceases, Where the Spirit comes in floods — Refrain

3/. Lead me higher, nothing dreading, In the race to never stop,
In Thy footsteps keep me treading, Give me grace to reach the top.

4/. Make me better, make me purer, Keep me where the fire refines,
Where the breath of God is sweeter, Where the brightest glory shines.

QUOTES TO NOTE – THANKFUL

I was given such a great gift. It’s a miracle that never stops amazing me and reminding me to give thanks, every day. Having a wife and daughter gives me a lot more purpose. I was much more selfish before, but now I think about what kind of role model I’ll be. I just want to be a better man. Jake Owen

DAILY MEDITATIONS

SUPREME COMMITMENT – Matthew 26: 31-46

It has to be said, life was a tremendous challenge to Christ all the way through. He was not given an easy role and work to fulfil. There was the readiness to accept the demand of the incarnation, leaving the divine form to be invested with a human one. The humble and exacting requirement of life at Nazareth, the claims that were on His ministry, besides being wholly responsible for the welfare of twelve men had been His lot. At this crisis moment, there came the issue of the betrayal, the knowledge that Peter would deny Him and then the seeming indifference of the three he had taken into the Garden of Gethsemane with Him.

He had not failed in His commitment at any point. But now the trial, suffering and Cross were just ahead. It all seems to overtake Him in this sacred place and would overwhelm Him. The demands would be very high and the issue had to be resolved. There was a great inner battle going on at this hallowed spot. Prayer was the only answer to such an ordeal. He prayed the issue through and expressed His total conviction and dedication – “Father, not My will but Yours be done” – vv39, 42, 43.

This incident reveals the example that Christ has laid down for all of His disciples. It is up to each one of us to adopt this principle in word and action. The important thing for you to achieve is the will of God. This may well entail taking the path of suffering to achieve the blessedness of others. As you seek the face of God, may you have His holy resolve in you to commit yourself to whatever His claims may be at this time.  Be ready to surrender to His will because this is the reason why you have been brought into His Kingdom – “Your will be done . . .”

If you lack knowledge and understanding in your present circumstances, be reminded of the assurance given in the Scriptures. God’s Word to you is: “If any man lack wisdom let him ask of God, who giveth to all men liberally”. There is no need to be unduly worried about the LORD because He knows all there is to know about everyone and everything from the eternal past, the present and future. Nothing baffles Him and He has the absolute ability to answer perfectly. Seeing He cares for you beyond measure, He will be your Counsellor and Instructor today, affording the answers you require amidst your dilemmas and difficulties. It is opportune for you to prove how much He loves you and to enjoy Him working out things for your good. Remember the promise: “No good thing will He withhold from Him that walks uprightly”.

SACRED SONGS

This choice and inspiring song has been an inspiration and blessing to countless thousands over the years. When in situations of great difficulty and grief they have derived wonderful strength from above as the truth of the words have become rooted in their being. May be today you need to quote and sing the words and draw again from the fountain of truth and faith.

Leaning on the Everlasting Arms is a hymn published in 1887 with music by Anthony J. Showalter and lyrics by Showalter and Elisha Hoffman.

Showalter said that he received letters from two of his former pupils saying that their wives had died. When writing letters of consolation, Showalter was inspired by the phrase in the Book of Deuteronomy 33:27 “The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms”.

Elisha Hoffman (1839-1929) after graduating from Union Seminary in Pennsylvania was ordained in 1868. As a minister he was appointed to the circuit in Napoleon, Ohio in 1872. He worked with the Evangelical Association’s publishing arm in Cleveland for eleven years. He served in many chapels and churches in Cleveland and in Grafton in the 1880s, among them Bethel Home for Sailors and Seamen, Chestnut Ridge Union Chapel, Grace Congregational Church and Rockport Congregational Church. In his lifetime he wrote more than 2,000 gospel songs including”Leaning on the everlasting arms” (1894). The fifty song books he edited include Pentecostal Hymns.

Leaning on the Everlasting Arms

1/.  What a fellowship, what a joy divine,  leaning on the everlasting arms;
What a blessedness, what a peace is mine,  leaning on the everlasting arms.

Refrain:
Leaning, leaning,  safe and secure from all alarms;
leaning, leaning,  leaning on the everlasting arms.

2/. O how sweet to walk in this pilgrim way,  leaning on the everlasting arms;
O how bright the path grows from day to day,  leaning on the everlasting arms. [Refrain]

3/. What have I to dread, what have I to fear,  leaning on the everlasting arms?
I have blessed peace with my Lord so near,  leaning on the everlasting arms. [Refrain]

QUOTES TO NOTE – THANKFUL

Make it a habit to tell people thank you. To express your appreciation, sincerely and without the expectation of anything in return. Truly appreciate those around you, and you’ll soon find many others around you. Truly appreciate life, and you’ll find that you have more of it.

DAILY MEDITATIONS

A SELL OUT – Matthew 26: 14-29

The wicked deed of Judas Iscariot will go down as the biggest sell-out of all time. He was responsible for making the worst bargain any individual could make. There was objection to the anointing of Christ in his spirit because he was more concerned about the lost revenue involved. Being the treasurer, he took the opportunity of pilfering from the kitty. However, He was prepared to sell his Lord and Master, his best Friend, for 30 pieces of silver! Money had so enamoured and laid hold of him that he had lost all true perspective and value. No one would have thought that he would have committed such an atrocious thing, but it happened. It was an awful sell-out!

From the account we note that he did it in a deceitful manner. Privately he went to do a deal with the chief priests and they agreed the price. The Lord made known to him that He was fully aware of what had transpired. In the Passover Meal Jesus revealed how much He loved him by giving him the sop, the dainty morsel. In no way did it create any remorse or repentance because he had become hardened in his being and desire. One would have thought that he would have had second thoughts and altered course, but he didn’t.

It is essential to keep a true set of values in Christian life. The devil seeks to tempt and draw aside by offering things that ultimately are a sell-out on Christ and the things of God. Some lucrative appointment or means of making money that is questionable is offered to the sacrificing of the best. Be alert and avoid falling for the bait. Christ is to be your most cherished possession for He holds your future now and eternally in His hands. He has given all for you: give all to Him.

DAILY MESSAGE

This is a new and fresh day for you to enter into and enjoy to the full. The One whom you love, believe in and serve is always fresh and desirous of doing fresh things in and with you so that your life and character is constantly being refreshed and renewed by Him. He has fresh words to impart and inspire you with, fresh people that you are to meet and bring freshness into their lives, fresh problems to solve through His grace and wisdom, fresh blessings to enjoy that have never been your lot before and so many other new things that will enrich your life. So don’t get bogged down in your past but move into today and throughout with a new high in and through Him. This day is different and is going to be different! Agree with Jeremiah who said I n Lamentations: “New every morning are your mercies; great in Your faithfulness”.

SACRED SONGS

This is one of the best known, loved and true hymns ever sung and is still relevant. It expresses the absolute and basic need for man to saved and delivered from his sin. It points to the only way possible that has been provided by God through His Son Jesus Christ, by His life, death and resurrection and present intercessory work in heaven. The only way that a person can have a relationship with God on earth and finally a place in heaven is through Christ and what He has done. Hallelujah! What a saviour and what a salvation!

Miss Charlotte Elliott was visiting some friends in the West End of London, and there met the eminent minister, Cesar Malan. While seated at supper, the minister said he hoped that she was a Christian. She took offence at this, and replied that she would rather not discuss that question. Dr. Malan said that he was sorry if had offended her, that he always liked to speak a word for his Master, and that he hoped that the young lady would some day become a worker for Christ. When they met again at the home of a mutual friend, three weeks later, Miss Elliott told the minister that ever since he had spoken to her she had been trying to find her Saviour, and that she now wished him to tell her how to come to Christ. Just come to him as you are, Dr. Malan said. This she did, and went away rejoicing. Shortly afterward she wrote this hymn.

About these words, her brother said: In the course of a long ministry, I hope I have been permitted to see some of the fruit of my labor, but I feel that far more has been done by a single hymn of my sister’s.

Evangelist Billy Graham said he was saved in 1934 in a revival meeting in Charlotte, North Carolina, led by Mordecai Ham, after hearing Just As I Am. This became an altar call song in the Billy Graham Crusades in the latter half of the 20th Century. Graham also used it in the title of his 1997 book, Just As I Am: The Autobiography of Billy Graham.

Just as I Am without One Plea

Just as I am—without one plea, But that Thy blood was shed for me,
And that Thou bidst me come to Thee—O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

Just as I am—and waiting not To rid my soul of one dark blot,
To Thee whose blood can cleanse each spot—O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

Just as I am—though tossed about With many a conflict, many a doubt,
Fightings and fears within, without— O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

Just as I am—poor, wretched, blind; Sight, riches, healing of the mind,
Yea, all I need in Thee to find—O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

Just as I am—Thou wilt receive, Wilt welcome, pardon, cleanse, relieve;
Because Thy promise I believe—O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

Just as I am—Thy love unknown Hath broken every barrier down;
Now, to be Thine, yea, Thine alone—O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

Just as I am—of that free love The breadth, length, depth, and height to prove,
Here for a season, then above—O Lamb of God, I come, I come!.

QUOTES TO NOTE – THANKFUL

If the only prayer you ever say in your entire life is thank you, it will be enough. Meister Eckhart

DAILY MEDITATIONS

A MEMORABLE DEED – Matthew 26: 1-14

Little did the woman think that as she set out to express her great appreciation for her Lord that she would do something that would create such a stir and become a lasting memorial! Her uppermost thought and desire was to express her loving gratitude to the One who had done and meant so much for and to her. Christ had It was regrettable that the disciples, especially Judas, should criticize and condemn her in such a manner. But Christ saw beyond what they saw and justified her deed. Behind it all was the prompting of God that moved her because she was doing something prophetically. She was anointing Christ before His death and not afterwards. She was demonstrating her thoughts and feelings whilst she had opportunity. No doubt, later, she was glad that she had not postponed it for another occasion.

It is good to be able to manifest in a magnificent way your love and appreciation of Christ. Why not ask Him how you can, in a unique and generous manner, express your faith and affection in some noble deed. Barnabas did it by selling a plot of land and giving the proceeds to relieve the needs of others. Dorcas spent her life in making garments to clothe the needy. The Lord can reveal to you how you can glorify Him by some generous gesture that will leave an abiding testimony to Him and ultimately be justified by Him. Do what the Lord prompts you to do today.

Maybe you have a problem with the word, idea and experience of discipline. It seems to suggest to you something that is hard and difficult and to accept and apply and so to be turned away from because of its workings and presentation. But really, you are not going to be anything or make much of your life unless there is the application of Christian discipline. Christ comes to live inside you in order to apply things, if attended to, will make for your great profit and promotion. They are like rungs in a ladder that have to be ascended in order to scale the heights. No athlete, student or other person aspiring in some other field of enterprise makes it without diligent application to principles and genuine directives that produce graduation and usefulness of a great order and character. People who accept and knuckle down to the principles of Christian kingdom life are sure to rise to a creditable position and ministry. Make sure you are one of them!

SACRED SONG

This was a regular in former years in Gospel Meetings. It was a sung testimony to the wonder-working power of Christ when He comes into the heart to take charge. He not only comes Himself but brings all the additional blessings and advantages to enrich life in everyway. Those who really let him in to take over have no regrets only superlative delight and drive in and to life. Every day living becomes different!

What a wonderful Change in my Life has been Wrought

Author:

Rufus H. McDaniel was ordained in the Christian church in 1873. He found much joy in church music. He began writing hymns in the 1880’s. He wrote, “I feel in my soul that God has something for me to do in brightening the experience of struggling souls. My chief desire is to be a blessing, if possible, to my fellow-men through these hymns and thereby glorify God in the name of his dear son ‘whose I am and whom I serve.’

It was the instrument used by the Holy Spirit in the conversion of Policeman Fowler during the Billy Sunday Philadelphia meeting. What the apostolic preaching of the great evangelist failed to do, this song of personal testimony did—brought about Fowler’s conversion. More than a hundred policemen were led to Christ by the change wrought in the life of one man by this song.

What a wonderful change in my life has been wrought Since Jesus came into my heart!
I have light in my soul for which long I had sought, Since Jesus came into my heart!

Refrain

Since Jesus came into my heart, Since Jesus came into my heart,
Floods of joy o’er my soul Like the sea billows roll, Since Jesus came into my heart.

I have ceased from my wandering and going astray, Since Jesus came into my heart!
And my sins, which were many, are all washed away, Since Jesus came into my heart! – Refrain

I’m possessed of a hope that is steadfast and sure, Since Jesus came into my heart!
And no dark clouds of doubt now my pathway obscure, Since Jesus came into my heart! – Refrain.

QUOTES TO NOTE – THANKFUL

Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend – Melody Beattie

DAILY MEDITATIONS

USE YOUR GIFTS – Matthew 25: 14-46

Christ’s tells a very interesting story that is connected to His return. He mentions a wealthy man giving his servants monetary amounts to be used by them during his absence so as to exploit their ability. They differed in amounts but each was called to invest and work with in such order to make more and to evidence their skill. A talent was worth a tremendous amount of money in those days, so the master was entrusting them with gift and opportunity.

Two out of the three worked with what was given and saw some positive results. They doubled up their amount and so used their natural talents besides the monetary gifts. One buried the one that was given and failed to make use of his ability and money. They were called to account as to what they had done whilst He was away with the time and talents. Two were graciously rewarded whilst the other was reproved and removed as an unprofitable servant. What the master was concerned about was not so much about how much was made but in the use of the gifts.

You do well to consider what the Lord has dispensed to you in terms of talents and to see that they are properly and constantly used to the full. He desires that you develop your skills and abilities to their full potential so that you will advance both your character and performance rate and usefulness. In no way does He want you to sit around but to be industrious with your life in every way. When He returns He will call to account and have a resume on how you have worked. May you give Him satisfaction and the joy of appointing you to a noble sphere in His eternal Kingdom.

Wonderful Birth to a Manger He Came

You will once more be very soon celebrating the advent of Jesus Christ as your Saviour and Lord. It has ever been a meaningful time and experience for you. It isa season that has special emphasis because it announces one of the epoch moments of human history, God the Son given up His divine form to take hold of a human body and manifest real humanity in a perfect manner. He vacated a throne for a woman’s womb and manger. These verses give full expression to this fact and tells the story and end result of His coming.

Alfred Henry Ackley was born 21 January 1887 in Spring Hill, Pennsylvania. He was the youngest son of Stanley Frank Ackley and the younger brother of B. D. Ackley. His father taught him music and he also studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London. He graduated from Westminster Theological Seminary in Maryland and was ordained as a Presbyterian minister in 1914. He served churches in Pennsylvania and California. He also worked with the Billy Sunday and Homer Rodeheaver evangelist team and for Homer Rodeheaver’s publishing company. He wrote around 1500 hymns. He died 3 July 1960 in Los Angeles.

According to Hymntime.com “Ackley received musical training from his father in New York City and at the Royal Academy of Music in London, and became a great cello player.  For a few years he worked with evangelist Billy Sunday, and also served as assistant pastor of Shadyside Presbyterian Church in Pittsburgh, PA. He wrote some 1,500 religious and secular songs.  John Brown University (Arkansas) awarded him an honorary Doctor of Sacred Music degree.

Wonderful birth, to a manger he came, Made in the likeness of man, to proclaim  God’s boundless love for a world sick with sin, Pleading for sinners to let him come in.

Refrain

Wonderful name he bears, Wonderful crown he wears, Wonderful blessings his triumphs afford; Wonderful Calvary, Wonderful grace for me, Wonderful love of my wonderful Lord.

Wonderful life, full of service so free, Friend to the poor and the needy was he; Unfailing goodness on all he bestowed, Undying faith in the vilest he showed – refrain

Wonderful death, for it meant not defeat, Calvary made his great mission complete, Wrought our redemption, and when he arose, Banished for ever the last of our foes – refrain

Wonderful hope, he is coming again, Coming as king o’er the nations to reign; Glorious promise, his word cannot fail, His righteous kingdom at last must prevail! – refrain

DAILY MEDITATIONS

A WISE PROCEDURE – Matthew 25: 1-13

The issue of His return to earth again is so important that Christ has further lessons and illustrations to drive home the message. The point is really made that no one actually knows the date or hour of the event – v13.  The occasion is divinely certain; the uncertainty only exists from man’s standpoint. He is ignorant of the definite time in the schedule of God. Nothing could be surer in the planning of God. What is essential is that there should be vigilance to the signs of the times and an alertness that is exhibited in total readiness.

The telling of the story of the ten bridesmaids was used by Christ to emphasize the need to be wholly ready for the coming of the Bridegroom. The contrast between the five wise and foolish bridesmaids is noted in their state of preparation. The five foolish were not ready for the long wait and had inadequacy of oil and so were found wanting on the Bridegroom’s arrival. They were left with their regrets and remorse over their stupidity. It could have been so different!

Behind this is a most potent message: do not leave things to chance and vain hope on the crucial happening of all time. There is the need for you to be wide-awake and watchful so that this tremendous phenomenon does not find you sleeping and off guard. You will not receive a telegram or on Email to tell you it is to take place tomorrow. Let vigilance characterize your faith and behaviour so that you will not be embarrassed when your Lord returns. Be wise and sensible at this crucial hour!

SACRED SONGS

Would you be free  from Your burden of sin

This was an old-time favourite sung at our weekly Gospel Services. Many who became Christians were influenced by this hymn with its abiding truth and dynamic. It was easily learned and became the means of releasing a meeting into spiritual freedom prior to the preaching.

DAILY MEDITATIONS

ARE YOU ALL PRIMED UP? – Matthew 24

The next great event as far as Christians are concerned is the return of Jesus Christ, their Lord and Saviour. He gave to His disciples in prophecy the things that would occur prior to this happening. He predicted with certainty those things that would precede the fall of Jerusalem and the ultimate events and attitudes that would prevail just before His actual return. One of the things would be the indifferent spirit of the world and its commitment to a pleasure-minded lifestyle as reflected in Noah’s day – vv37-39. It would seem that this is characteristic of the days in which we live.

The emphasis of Christ is primarily on being ready – vv-40-43. When Christ does return there will be those who will miss out because of unpreparedness. The reason for this is due to their over-involvement in this life’s affairs and a lack of spiritual desire and pursuit. There has to be a wise and total investment of life and gift in the business of His Kingdom and a keen expectancy regarding the King’s arrival –vv45. Serving others and living the kind of life that pleases Him is top priority.

If Christ should come today, would you be ready? It is a searching question and one that requires an answer. Do not put off the issue but let the second coming of Christ not only be a matter of belief, let it form and control your conduct. There is nothing to prevent the glorious advent of Christ so make sure that you are on tiptoe ready to hail His arrival. There is eternal reward for so doing – v46.
