There is a time for you to look backward over the past to see the road the Lord has brought you along, noting the blessings experienced, the lessons learned, the progress made. There is a moment, too, that you should take stock of the present, to see where you are, what you have become. Be grateful for what has been wrought of a positive nature and be encouraged. But now is the opportunity to look at and face the future and to do so with divine optimism. Know that the Lord is with and for you and stands by waiting to afford needful guidance, sure provision, answers to prayer. He who has been All-Sufficient, in the former years,is still up to seeing you complete the journey. Begin to anticipate at the outset, therefore, that which is before. It is going to be owned and blessed by God your Father. Happy New Year to One and All!

This song is to find us in a strong, spiritual and military mood. We are ready to face whatever and whoever is before us in the wisdom, strength and assistance of our heavenly leader, Christ, supported by the angelic forces. There is no need for us to wilt, wither and fail because we are on the wining side, nevertheless we have to contend for the cause of Christ in these evil days. In the knowledge that we are almost at the closure of the contest the more reason we should move on with courage, determination and expectation. We follow a great Leader and He ensures the ultimate of the battle.

A RETURN TO USEFULNESS – 2 Kings 6: 1-7

There was a need to enlarge the premises for the school of the prophets. This was a healthy sign of growth and development. Elisha headed the group as its leader and so they sought his accord and presence in this project. He was pleased to respond in this venture and went with them down to the riverside to chop down the trees for the new building. He was not too busy that he could not be alongside of them as they sought to fulfil the vision. Alas! In the process, as one laid his axe to a tree its loose head flew off and landed in the water. He was distressed because it was not his property and so solicited the help of the man of God.

It required a miracle and Elisha performed one in causing the axe head to swim.  What an amazing sight to witness this piece of iron surface and then float! Not only was it restored and an embarrassing situation saved, but also the instrument could be returned to use. The young prophet could once again become industrious and help in the great purpose of expansion. His time and energy was put to employment for further service in a noble cause. Instead of standing around grieving he would be happily engaged in a loving labour with the knowledge that he had a testimony to a miracle in his life and work.

Perhaps it may be that once you were greatly involved in sacred mission but something has happened that has brought a halt and sense of disappointment or despair. Something of major note has been lost and closed down your work for God. The gift you once had apparently has disappeared and now a sense of frustration and failure exists. Christ your Lord and Master is an expert at restoring lost factors. Why not implore Him, as He is near by to renew you and your giftings so that you can return to real enterprising work for Him and His kingdom?

Take note, it is imperative that you pass through the wilderness and enter into your divine inheritance in the Land of Promise. This is a vital stage to you in becoming a great possessor in spiritual and supernatural realities and blessings. There are essential tests to be faced but in them the Lord would reveal His presence and power and aid in negotiating them. Fear, doubt or unbelief must not be entertained. Learn to develop that calm trust like Joshua and Caleb and you will be in the right frame to enter your inheritance. The wilderness is to see you graduating in faith and obedience so that you will be a strong and capable person, sufficient to be an overcomer in the land of pleasure and fulfilment. Do not get stuck in the wilderness, knowing it is to be a gateway into the best, not a graveyard. This is your year for possession!!

Fight the Good Fight

The opening words of this indicate that the Christian Life is not about living a garden of roses, in an idyllic situation where all appears beautiful, fragrant and soothing. No, it is not a comfort zone but a battle-field. General Booth caught this revelation and sought to implant and inspire it in those who came to Christ through its testimony. He offered blood and fire. The Christian has been called to the battle-field and has to contend with the forces of evil led by Satan. As Paul reveals: the Christian must be clothed in the armour of God and stand his ground against a vicious enemy – Ephesians 6:1-10..

Baring-Gould asked me to compose a tune to Come Holy Ghost, Our Souls Inspire,  to be sung at a large meeting of Yorkshire colliers. I walked, talked, slept and ate with the words, and at last evolved the tune which I naturally named Pentecost…One day, as I was walking along Regent Street I felt a slap on my back, and turning around saw my dear old friend Arthur Sullivan.  My dear Billy, he said, I’ve seen a tune of yours which I must have. (He was then editing Church Hymns) All right, I said, Send me a cheque and I agree. No copy of the book, much less a proof was sent to me, and when I saw the tune I was horrified to find that Sullivan had assigned it to Fight the good fight! We had a regular fisticuffs about it, but judging from the favour with which the tune has been received, I feel that Sullivan was right in so mating words and music.

This hymn was sung in the movie – “Chariots of Fire”.

DAILY MEDITATIONS

WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN? – 2 Kings 5: 20-27

This was the searching question that was put by the prophet to his servant Gehazi. He had the opportunity to answer it honestly but decided to tell a lie in order to deceive the servant of the Lord. He ought to have known the man of God better having been with him so long. Besides manifesting the sin of covetousness he added the evil of untruthfulness to his conduct. In doing what he did he had left a wrong factor in the one that had been released of his disease. Elisha had stated that his healing was free; an act of divine generosity, but this perverse deed had sown the wrong idea in the recent delivered man.

The consequence of where he had been was to lead Gehazi into a different way of life. He was smitten with leprosy and was no longer able to fulfil the role of being the prophet’s servant. Instead of being a divine protégé for the future, going in the direction of readiness to be the prophet’s successor, he is robbed of the possibility of making a mark for God and living a fulfilled life. Things could have been so different if he had not gone chasing after the natural and material.

How careful Christians have to be that they are not sidelined by the allurement of earthly things! The temptation does come where people have materialism offered at the expense of their spiritual well being and so miss out on God’s calling and anointing. Do not allow greed or covetousness to move in and take over and lead you down the wrong track. As you go with God He will more than take care of your needs. Abundant provision will be yours as you maintain your integrity to Him. You are being schooled for something greater in His purposes. Do not miss it!

It was Joseph who spoke out these words from the depth of the experiences he had in his life –‘GOD WILL VISIT YOU’ – Genesis 50:24. God’s people were to expect His invention in the coming days. Joseph had been very successful in managing Egypt’s economy through very good and bad seasons. Everything had gone amazingly well for him but he did not forget where his real roots were. He had been born into a family that were destined to be the people of God and this was what concerned him above all else. (And so have you!). All that Egypt could offer in terms of position, programme and prosperity was nothing to what God had in mind for Israel. The passage of time and success had not eroded the things that truly mattered to him above all else. He had managed to keep spiritually alert and his mind divinely focused. So this year the LORD would fill you with faith and anticipation as to something of significant movement and blessing that is to be life-changing!

I’ll Praise my Maker while I’ve breath

This is a hymn that makes me feel swell and good in relation to God.especially when singing the words. The words and tune are great and give a true impression of Him in all His love, grace and goodness. In recalling it, when remembers the times one has been spiritually stirred and animated as the knowledge of Him is sense.

Isaac Watts is often called the “Father of English Hymnody.”

Watts (1674-1748) was not the first person to write hymns, but he was the first English-language poet who produced a significant number of hymns of high quality.

In the 18th century, hymns could be distinguished from metrical psalms. During the time of Watts, congregational song was dominated by strict metrical versions of the Psalms. For example, compare “All People That on Earth Do Dwell” (1561), William Kethe’s metrical version of Psalm 100, to the translation found in the King James Version. The similarities of language are striking for Kethe’s metrical rendition, the oldest continuously sung congregational song in North America.

Watts wanted to break the stranglehold of metrical psalms on congregational singing. To facilitate this he composed psalm paraphrases that were freer in their relationship to the original psalm and, in addition, “hymns of human composure”—freely composed hymns such as “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross.”

“I’ll Praise My Maker” is Watts’ paraphrase of Psalm 146. It was originally entitled “Praise to God for his Goodness and Truth” and published in his famous Psalms of David, Imitated in the Language of the New Testament (1719).

John Wesley played a prominent role in preserving this hymn as we know it today, slightly adapting four of the six original stanzas. Wesley strengthened Watts’ first line of the hymn which originally read, “I’ll praise my Maker with my breath.”

DAILY MEDITATIONS

AN HUMBLING EXPERIENCE – 2 Kings 5: 7-19

As Naaman set out to experience a miracle he did not realize what a humbling process he would have to pass through. It would prove rather a difficult route. The king of Israel when approached was not too cooperative and could only envisage the possibility of war. When the captain arrived to see the prophet he was somewhat dismayed and angry because he did not act according to his pre-set notions. He was none too pleased that the servant of God did not come out to even recognize him. What the man of God declared to receive a cure was not acceptable. This leading soldier had a problem of pride as well as leprosy and this needed attention first.

Thankfully he was made to see sense by his own servants and was prepared to follow through the directions. It was a humbling procedure but it worked and he obtained his deliverance. Far better to be humbled and have the curse of the disease removed than be humbled continually by its presence and ignominy. He learned his lesson that day and came to believe in and acknowledge Israel’s God and servant. As Elisha stated: “he will learn that there is a true prophet of God in Israel” – v8. What joy the captive maid must have experienced on his return!

Many do not experience the things that God wills to give them not only through the lack of faith but because of the existence of pride. This evil is worse than a disease; in fact it is a sinful disease. It prevents countless numbers from enjoying God’s forgiveness and favour, His healing, direction, provision etc. Possibly the hold up in your life to knowing God’s grace and power is due to it. Be prepared to be humbled.

The Scouts Motto is very apt at this point of time in your life – Be Prepared. As you are about to embark on another year you need to spend moments assessing where you are in God, with others, family, friends the church fellowship, service and so on. Give thanks for where you have arrived, that you are around to view things and to consider what yet needs to be wrought. Having come so far, in spite of challenges and difficulties, something has been wrought. There may have only been seemingly minor progress but still you are around and so is the Lord. This can be your year where you really begin to motor and see dreams and plans come to fruition. Even though it appears late in the day, as the old saying goes, ‘it never is too late’. Many have risen at what appears the last hour and opportunity and it has witnessed a choice finale. Let me encouraged you to go for it and enjoy the journey and outcome.

It is good to be reminded of the fact that Christ rose from the dead and is still alive and in business. The great news is, He is back from heaven to takes all those that belong to Him back to His heavenly home. This song proclaims the rich and abiding assurance that fills the being of those who know and of their expectations concerning this wonderful Saviour, Friend and Lord.

Jessie Brown Pounds was born in Hiram, Ohio, a suburb of Cleveland on 31 August 1861. She was not in good health when she was a child so she was taught at home. She began to write verses for the Cleveland newspapers and religious weeklies when she was fifteen. After an editor of a collection of her verses noted that some of them would be well suited for church or Sunday School hymns, J. H. Fillmore wrote to her asking her to write some hymns for a book he was publishing. She then regularly wrote hymns for Fillmore Brothers. She worked as an editor with Standard Publishing Company in Cincinnati from 1885 to 1896, when she married Rev. John E. Pounds, who at that time was a pastor of the Central Christian Church in Indianapolis.

AN UNUSUAL MESSENGER – 2 Kings 5: 1-6

She turned out to be rather an unusual messenger to a man of importance and in desperate straits. Only a captive maid-girl yet she became the bearer of vital news that was going to make a difference to a military commander. The little girl had been taken as a slave by the Syrian forces that had made inroads into northern Israel. She was made to serve a mistress of the leader that had possibly led the expedition. She could have easily resented this domestic work and failed in her area of work.

When her master contracted the dreaded leprosy she is the one that came up with the answer to her mistress. She said, “I wish my master would go and see the prophet in Samaria. He would heal him of his leprosy” (Living Bible.) Her mistress and master believed the girl because of her conduct. The miracle was not only in the captain’s deliverance but also in the fact that he was ready to trust the word and message of this captive maid. Little did she know that she would be making history and that later on Jesus Christ would refer to this incident! Her witness was crucial!

It is inspiring and encouraging to know that the Lord can use such an instrument to impact in a big way. Life and testimony go together to create faith in others to look to God to answer them. You can be personally used by God to bring an answer to those around you that require a miracle. There are people that are crying out for a solution to major crises in their lives. As you manifest integrity and dedication to the Lord, He will engage you to be His messenger and you will have the delight of seeing Him at work. Light up your daily scene of labour with honest endeavour and a base will be established for fruitful witness.

THREE OUTSTANDING FACTORS  

Jonah 3

There are things that stand out further in the commission of Jonah by Jehovah in the accomplishing of the divine purpose and each are related one to the other. When examined and properly considered they reveal the true method by which the grace and salvation of the Lord is brought into effect. The things show how vital it is to be conversant with the way in which God does seek to intervene in crisis conditions. This was so with regard to both Jonah and the inhabitants of Nineveh. It is possible to learn something here of major note and worth that can aid in present work and service.

1/. THE OBEDIENCE OF THE PROPHET – vv1-4

The first thing that occurred was the Lord speaking again to Jonah. This indicates that He had not altered His mind or changed the commission. It also makes the point that He was giving him a further realisation that he was being gracious to him. He is immediately prompted to obey and goes without questioning to fulfil the command. Any previous reluctance has been dealt with and there appears to have been a good empowering upon his life and word. As he enters the city he lifts up his voice boldly and powerfully to declare what was to happen in the way of judgment because of the wickedness of the people. The prophetic word was sounded with authority and certainty and it hit home.

2/. THE REPENTANCE OF THE PEOPLE – vv5-9

It seems as if the whole city of people was suddenly awakened in spirit and felt the thrust of the prophetic word. They felt the cutting edge of truth and sensed they were in real jeopardy and the need to do something to show their sorrow. Maybe before the prophet’s arrival they were aware of the decline and degeneration but did not know how to call it to a halt but the intervention of the prophet and the divine word became a catalyst for genuine action. The need for them was to get right and get right with God hence the humbling of themselves.

3/. THE BENEVOLENCE OF THE LORD – v10

Because of the recognition of the fact they were sinners and because there was a readiness to make a definite change, the Lord was immediate in expressing His love, forgiveness and grace. The judgment that was due is halted and the people are relieved to know that God’s favour has been extended to them. It is still true today: God ever wills to express His mercy and grace, hence the Gospel of Christ.

CONCLUSION

The benevolence of the Lord that had been exercised towards the prophet and people and is the great characteristic of  God at all times. He wills to be gracious.

As you reflect upon the past twelve months, consider the way the Lord has guided your steps and how He has more than ministered to your daily needs. Let there be an attitude of thanksgiving and at the same time the inspiration of faith for the future in Him and His promises. He who has not failed to be with and stand by you  will always be hand to negotiate the days and circumstances ahead. After all, He knows exactly what awaits and is always in the best and able to position to work on your behalf. He who has seen His people through the ages is the same One that is alongside ensuring all will be well. There is much in the world and society to cause the alarm bells to ring but they will not disturb you because your hand is the hand in who holds the universe in His hand, too.

Blessed Lord in Thee is Refuge

I must confess, this spiritual song is one of my favourites and has been a means of untold strength and blessing over 70 years. The last  few lines have been sung oft by me when in trying circumstances and have brought me through – “O for faith that changes fighting  Into vict’ry’s ringing cheer”. One has proved it to be true. Battles have to be faced, fought and won and faith in God through His Word is a conquering force!

Author –  In the early 1880’s, Herbert Booth was active in Salvation Army work in France, and wrote some of his early songs in French. He developed “The Salvation Soldier’s Song Book” in 1897. Well-educated, he had attended Allesley Park College, Coventry, and the Congregational Institute, Nottingham. In 1883, Herbert helped found the Salvation Army’s Music Department at Clapton. He directed various aspects of Salvation Army work in England, Canada and Australia, and around 1902 went on extensive lecture tours in the U.S., South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. Little known is the fact that in Australia, he wrote scripts and directed films along with Joseph Perry, as part of the Army’s ;Limelight Department’  there. The Salvation Army was – and is – always glad to find new means of telling people how Jesus can affect their lives.

DAILY MEDITATIONS

BOUNDLESS PROVISION – 2 Kings 4: 38-44

The young prophets needed to realise the immense ability of God to deal with great emergencies. Who better to learn it from than Elisha. He was a man that absolutely believed to see the miraculous take place and was not disappointed. The protégés were able to observe first hand what it meant to have the anointing and touch of God. This divine leader had a capacity and ministry from God to deal with any immediate problem no matter how difficult it appeared to be. He rose to any challenge and saw God perform outstandingly.

On two occasions he demonstrated God’s grace and power. Poison had been introduced into the pot through the putting in of wild gourds. It was unfit for consumption. But Elisha had the answer and a miracle occurred in the negating of the harmful poison. So the food was not wasted in the time of famine. Further, he made a little go a long way. The food that was meant for him he gave to the prophets. It was a small amount amongst so many and Gehazi questioned its sufficiency. It was a case of being more than enough as he gave the command and ordered its distribution. It was boundless provision in the hour of need.

There is no need to worry about daily provisions even if crisis should occur. God still loves to perform miracles but He does require people who believe Him and His Word so that such will occur. No matter how desperate the circumstance, He is able to demonstrate His wisdom and power. If you are in great need, why not look to Him alone for the answer and you will know His remarkable intervention? He is still at hand to reveal His immense and infinite capability.

Remember, Christmas was but the beginning of Christ’s life on earth. There were many other days following that was to map out His work for all of humanity, yes, even you. He knew what it was to be a baby, child, teenager and so on until He reached manhood. At the peak of His manhood He did something infinitely more wonderful that being born in a manger. He died on a Cross and was crucified on behalf of all men, yes, you. The reason He came spelt out in Mark 10:45 “For the son of man came not to be ministered unto but to minister, and to give His life a ransom for many”. His birth is ever to be linked with His death. They are inseparable. You can happily meditate and rejoice in them both because they were both a major success. He came amongst to do something for and in us and how successful He was. O Holy Night

In 1847, Placide Cappeau de Roquemaure was the commissionaire of wines in a small French town. Known more for his poetry than his church attendance, it probably shocked Placide when his parish priest asked the commissionaire to pen a poem for Christmas mass. Nevertheless, the poet was honoued to share his talents with the church.

In a dusty coach traveling down a bumpy road to France’s capital city, Placide Cappeau considered the priest’s request. Using the gospel of Luke as his guide, Cappeau imagined witnessing the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem. Thoughts of being present on the blessed night inspired him. By the time he arrived in Paris, “Cantique de Noel” had been completed.

Moved by his own work, Cappeau decided that his “Cantique de Noel” was not just a poem, but a song in need of a master musician’s hand. Not musically inclined himself, the poet turned to one of his friends, Adolphe Charles Adams for help.
The son of a well-known classical musician, Adolphe had studied in the Paris conservatoire. His talent and fame brought requests to write works for orchestras and ballets all over the world. Yet the lyrics that his friend Cappeau gave him must have challenged the composer in a fashion unlike anything he received from London, Berlin,or At, Petersburg.

As a man of Jewish ancestry, for Adolphe the words of “Cantique de Noel” represented a day he didn’t celebrate and a man he did not view as the son of God. Nevertheless, Adams quickly went to work, attempting to marry an original score to Cappeau’s beautiful words. Adams’ finished work pleased both poet and priest. The song was performed just three weeks later at a Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve.

Initially, “Cantique de Noel” was wholeheartedly accepted by the church in France and the song quickly found its way into various Catholic Christmas services. But when Placide Cappeau walked away from the church and became a part of the socialist movement, and church leaders discovered that Adolphe Adams was a Jew, the song–which had quickly grown to be one of the most beloved Christmas songs in France–was suddenly and uniformly denounced by the church. The heads of the French Catholic church of the time deemed “Cantique de Noel” as unfit for church services because of its lack of musical taste and “total absence of the spirit of religion.” Yet even as the church tried to bury the Christmas song, the French people continued to sing it, and a decade later a reclusive American writer brought it to a whole new audience halfway around the world. Not only did this American writer–John Sullivan Dwight–feel that this wonderful Christmas songs needed to be introduced to America, he saw something else in the song that moved him beyond the story of the birth of Christ. An ardent abolitionist, Dwight strongly identified with the lines of the third verse: “Truly he taught us to love one another; his law is love and his gospel is peace. Chains shall he break, for the slave is our brother; and in his name all oppression shall cease.” The text supported Dwight’s own view of slavery in the South. Published in his magazine, Dwight’s English translation of “O Holy Night” quickly found found favor in America, especially in the North during the Civil War.

A RELENTLESS QUEST – 2 Kings 4: 18-37

The woman in the account reveals a relentless mind and spirit when a real emergency suddenly occurred. The son that had been divinely given through prophecy unexpectedly was ill and died. She knew immediately that the answer to the problem was the prophet. It was imperative that she got to him with urgency. She needed to find him and secure his ministry. She said to her servant, “Hurry Don’t slow don’t down for my comfort unless I tell you to” -24. This indicates the determined frame of mind she was in as she proceeded with her task.

On meeting God’s servant she continued to reflect this determined state by catching hold of his feet and expressing her thought and emotion. Elisha knew there was something sadly wrong and discovered it was focused on her son. He sent his servant to go and minister but she was not satisfied because she knew that God was with Elisha. In no way was she going back without the anointed man of God. When Elisha arrived to deal with the extreme situation he likewise showed the same relentless attitude so that the miracle occurred. All ended well for all.

Often the reason why many do not know true and powerful answers to their critical conditions is due to the fact they do not learn to press through. There is a seeming willingness to accept what looks inevitable instead of pursuing and allowing God to work. Every crisis issue is the opportunity to believe and look to the Lord to act in His own unique ways. Perhaps you are facing one now: do not quit and despair but deliberately reach out to God and the right people and see His hand at work today.

This is a great and true title ascribed to one person alone, Jesus Christ, Prince of Peace – Isaiah 9:6. His advent into the world was to bring peace into the heart of every person who would receive Him, His life and ministry. He first of all, would introduce and establish peace with God, which means being reconciled to God the Father. He makes it possible through His sacrificial death to be forgiven and released from the guilt and penalty of sin which is eternal death and separation from God. Through His entrance into life you can be quickened to become a real child and son of God and know not only peace with God, but the dynamic peace of God inspiring and directing life. In a world in awful conflict and confusion His peace can dwell and rule your life and living. Being at peace you are in the best state of being to govern each day to profitable ends. Let His peace be yours today.

Christians Awake

The call this Christmas morning is to every Christian to awake to Christ and to what Christmas really means. The first spiritual act of the day is to worship Him, the wonder and worth of Christmas. He came to enrich all our lives with His presence, salvation and goodness and to share Himself with us forever as our Saviour, Lord and Friend. In going through the next hours we reflect upon His magnificent gesture to become one with us in order to do so much for us that no ones else could do.

Author

John Byrom was born in 1691, at Manchester, where his father was a linen-draper. He entered Trinity College, Cambridge, 1708; became a Fellow of the College in 1714; took his M.A. in 1716, and then proceeded to Montpelier, where he studied medicine. He afterwards abandoned medicine, settled in London, and obtained his living by teaching a system of shorthand, which he had projected. He was elected a member of the Royal Society in 1724. He died Sept. 28, 1763.

John Wainwright (b. Stockport, England, 1723; d. Stockport, 1768) wrote YORKSHIRE for this text in 1750. The tune was first sung on Christmas Day, 1750, in the parish church of Stockport; it was first published in Caleb Ashworth’s Collection of Tunes (1760) and then in Wainwright’s Collection.

KINDNESS REWARDED – 2 Kings 4: 8-17

A woman having noticed and perceived that the man who passed regularly by their home was a prophet, a servant of God, decided to do something about it. She talked to her husband and they agreed to add a chamber to their dwelling, furnish it and make it available to Elisha. On a regular basis hospitality was provided for him and his protégé. It was a generous thing to do on a continuous line. Needless to say, the prophet was most grateful for this exceptional kindness. She deserved to be honoured although she did not do it for that reason.

But it was not going to be left unrewarded. Sowing kindness of this nature must be compensated in some way. The prophet sought to find out what her deepest requirement was and ministered into it. There was no child in the home. The woman had not known the blessing of nursing her own baby and so the promise was given to this end. She thought this was incredible and impossible, but it happened! The Lord responded and the time came when she gave birth. As she looked at the newborn babe she would realize it all took place because she had taken the time to care for the Lord’s messenger.

It is necessary to be daily looking out for the opportunity of showing kindness to others. The new day given to you is that you might gladly and willingly do all you can to bless others with deeds of love and so leave those around with the influence of your gracious ministry. Who can tell what it will mean to them? Who knows what lies in store unexpectedly in terms of divine recompense? Learn to put yourself out for others and see what God will achieve in many ways.

On this Christmas Eve Day make sure you resolve to have Christ supreme in your thoughts and place over the next few days. Remember, you have been and are and ever will be a chief consideration in His mind both in time and eternity. Who He is and what He has done and yet to bring about is worthy of your truest and deepest meditation. Let this Christmas discover you knowing Him in a greater way and that your fellowship with Him be intensified and your labour for Him increased. Because He is the Best and has done the Best for you, He is simply to have the Best from you. This special season gives you that further opportunity of making sure He figures to be foremost in your thoughts and planning. You can only gain from such a deliberate exercise. So let this Christmas become more meaningful than ever!

As with Gladness Men of Old

This isn’t a song simply for the past, ‘men of old’, for the Christian community of the present. He who once was born still lives as a Risen, Exalted King destine to rule the universe. He seeks entrance into every human heart now and to give every reason to celebrate and sing. You not only need to visit the manger , but the Cross also, and find Him there to be your great Saviour, Friend and Lord. Christmas is purpose to lead you on to know Him and to be able to rejoice in His advent into the world, but your life, too. That is why Christmas and this carol is special – it introduces you the best Friend for Life and eternity!

The words and lyrics of the Christmas Carol ‘As with gladness men of old’ were written by William C. Dix in 1867. William Chatterton Dix (1837-1898) was born in Bristol, England and was the son of a Doctor. His career was spent in Insurance but he had a life long passion for writing lyrics for hymns and carols.

The music to the Christmas carol ‘As with gladness men of old’ was composed by the German musician Conrad Kocher (1786-1872). Kocher was well travelled and visited Russia and Italy. He established the School of Sacred Music at Stuttgart in 1821.

MORE THAN ENOUGH – 2 Kings 4: 1-7

It is a choice thing to read of the Lord caring about the need of a godly widow woman in real crisis. Her husband died leaving her heavily in debt and the prospect was very depressing. If she did not come up with the money then it looked as if her two sons would finish up as slaves to her debtor. Her recourse was to the man of God to see if he would help her amidst this awful circumstance. It was certainly a challenging factor to be dealt with for this anointed servant of God.

He did not send her away or back off from the issue but was quick in his response. She may have been in a quandary and difficulty but the prophet was not. He told her what to do with the jar of olive oil that she had. She needed to gather as many containers possible and then shut the door. She also had to pour the full jar out into the empty vessels. The larger jar only stopped pouring once there were no more other jars to be filled with the oil. She was able to sell it, pay off the debts and live off the rest. The prophet said, “and there will be enough money for you and your sons to live on” – Living Bible. She was to discover that God was a bountiful God and bigger than her need!

God’s people are thrown into situations of emergency when they find themselves where their funds have been reduced to nothing and there is a vast claim to be answered. It is easy to be driven to despair rather than prayer in these times. But God is still able to provide an abundant answer to the prevailing demand. He is an inexhaustible supply and supplier in all conditions. Perhaps you are wondering how you are going to make ends meet and wonder what to do? The God that met this woman will meet you and give you a testimony to His generosity in a great way.

One of the important things you should seek and maintain is a keen sense of values, to know what is important, of worth, and such to be jealously guarded and implemented. At this season of the year which is special in the Calendar of the Christian Church, Christmas, it is vital that Christ occupies first place in your faith and procedure. Whilst it is great to give gifts and party, the essential spiritual values of the scriptures, prayer and meeting together in Christian Fellowship as to conduct heavenly business. Many things of divine value are relegated to a subsidiary situation in the pursuit of the merely natural factors. It should be an occasion when you come to know Christ better and where your roots go deeper into Him. He is the most important factor in your daily agenda and at this season. Have a Happy Christmas with Christ in it!

While Shepherds Watch their Flocks by Night

An unforgettable carol based on an indescribable experience by humble shepherds tending their flock.  That night would never be forgotten in what they heard and saw and the knowledge of the Christ child would live on in their minds and hearts. May it be so for you. too!

This is a carol that cannot be forgotten at Christmas time. It is an apt reminder of the way that God broke into the humble life and lifestyle of those shepherds and give them an indescribable and memorable experience. What a privilege was accorded them of see the greatest baby ever to be born!

It is a Christmas Carol describing the Annunciation to the shepherds with words attributed to Irish hymnist, lyricist and England’s Poet Laureate Nahum Tate.

George Kirby, about whom little is known, was employed by Este to arrange some of tunes featured in his The Whole Book of Psalms and it is his arrangement of Tye’s work that appears in the  Psalter to accompany Psalm 84″How Lovely is Thy Dwelling Place” with the melody in the tenor. The tune and hymn text were probably first published together in an arrangement by William Henry Monk for  Hymns Ancient and Modern.

Professor Jeremy Dibble of Durham University has noted that “While Shepherds Watched” was “the only Christmas hymn to be approved by the Church of England in the 18th century and this allowed it to be disseminated across the country with the Book of Common Prayer. This was because most carols, which had roots in folk music, were considered too secular and thus not used in church services until the end of the 18th century.

JUST THE MAN– 2 Kings 3: 1-20

A real emergency existed: the two nations had become one in a conflict to overthrow Moab. Jehoshaphat had linked up with Jehoram to wage war with the king of Moab and suddenly they found themselves in real difficulty. There was no water whatsoever to sustain the vast army and they were vulnerable to defeat at the hands of their enemies. What should be done in this embarrassing situation? Jehoshaphat being a godly monarch felt the need for the help of God. Was there a man of God, a messenger of the Lord, that could give divine guidance and solution?

The reply came that Elisha was present. As far as Jehoshaphat was concerned, he was the person to turn to. He said, “He’s just the man we want” (Living Bible– v12.) He was relieved to know that was such a servant of Jehovah on hand. After rebuking Jehoram he delivers the word and gives a remarkable solution. Ditches had to be dug in faith in preparation for the water that was to flow, and so it happened. God justified the faith of Jehoshaphat and the prophetic word of his servant. There came the amazing deliverance for the host.

There will be crises that will arise that require a divine solution in these current days of evil. The Church of Christ must be possessed of people that know God well enough to be able to be an answer to these critical issues. God is ever around to be turned to. He will give the necessary inspiration and instruction so that people will know He is God and that He cares. You need to live in daily communion with Him so that people will seek your help and that you will be just the person for the crises.
