                     Children from Soviet Countries

SOWING SEEDS OF FAITH IN THE YOUNG

For the last 25 years, the governments of many former Soviet countries have been attempting to deal with the changing social and economic landscape of the family. Many children living in countries such as Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus must deal with broken families, substance abuse and neglectful situations. In Kiev. Ukraine, more than 50,000 children live on the streets. Poor economic conditions and the erosion of the family leave little hope for many of these children.

For those same 25 years, Trans World Radio has been broadcasting a message of love and hope to the spiritually impoverished people of and a the former USSR. At a time when missionaries were forbidden to carry the Word of God across the boundaries of the Iron Curtain, TWR was using the airwaves to bypass the restrictions of Communist governments. And thanks to one woman’s dedication, the children of past and present generations can hear about God’s love.

Susanna Tielmann began producing a children’s programme for TWR’s Russian Ministries department in 1981. For the first three years of the broadcasts, Susanna received absolutely no response from listeners. “It was like getting into the studio, sitting in this little room, and talking to four walls that were listening to you, just imagining that there were these kids who were listening,” she remembers.

Finally, letters and children’s drawings started to arrive. Last year, the Russian, Ukrainian and Belarusian Ministries (RUBM) department received more than 2,000 letters  from children. TWR was able to roughly calculate how many listeners were connected, and also received some beautiful artwork for their offices! One family even sent in their young son s very first drawing!

TWR’S partner ministries in these countries have now taken over the production of programmes for children. They know the importance of reaching children at a young age. As Proverbs 22:6 says, “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it”.

Praise the Lord that He is moving so effectively through this ministry to bring change into people’s lives, whether we receive letters from these listeners or not. Please pray for the programme producers, and for the young listeners who as so eager to learn more about a relationship with Jesus.

GOOD WILL COME OUT OF IT

“God meant it for good” Genesis 50: 20 NKJV

Before World War ll Josefina Guerrero was the toast of Manila, young, vivacious and married to a wealthy medical student. Then in 1941 she discovered she had leprosy. Immediately she began treatment, but when Japan invaded the Philippines all the leper hospitals were abandoned. Despite her disease Joey joined the underground, smuggling food, clothes, medicines and messages to POWs. She mapped out fortifications along the waterfront and the location of anti-aircraft batteries.

When guerrillas discovered a newly-sown minefield where the 37th Division was scheduled to land in Manila, they asked her to get the message through. With little thought for her own life she trudged through miles of enemy encampments with the map taped to her back and delivered it safely.

Because of her courage many dangerous missions were completed and the US War Department awarded her the Medal of Freedom with silver palm for saving untold American lives. Amazingly, Joey was never caught. In fact, Japanese soldiers had a horror of the ragged little woman who shuffled through the streets of Manila.  And even when she was stopped they didn’t detain her long, once they recognised the swathed bandages and lesions of advancing leprosy

George Mueller said, ‘In a thousand trials it’s not just five hundred that work for our good, but nine hundred and ninety-nine; plus one!’ The Scripture, ‘God planned good to come out of it’ means that no disaster, disease or delay can keep Him from turning it into something worthwhile. Understanding that God forgives your past knows your present and has planned your future, lets you walk in the confidence that nothing can ever happen to you that is beyond the scope of His grace and redemption!

LOVE IS A HABIT
by Rick Warren

“If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even ‘sinners’ love those who love them” – Luke 6:32 (NIV)

*** *** *** ***

If you only love on and off like a light switch, you do not love others like God wants you to love. Jesus said, “If you only love those who love you what credit is that to you?” – Luke 6:32 NIV.

His point is this: anybody can love those who love them. Becoming a master lover means you learn to love the unlovable. It’s when you love people who don’t love you, when you love people who irritate you, when you love people who stab you in the back or gossip about you.

This may seem like an impossible task and it is – that’s why we need God’s love in us, so we can then love others: “We know and rely on the love God has for us” – 1 John 4:16 NIV.

When you realize how much God loves you – with an extravagant, irresistible, unconditional love – then his love will change your entire focus on life. If we don’t receive God’s love for us, we’ll have a hard time loving other people. I’m talking about loving the unlovely, loving the difficult, loving the irritable, loving people who are different or demanding.

You can’t do that until you have God’s love coming through you. You need to know God’s love so it can overflow out of your life into others.

Love must become your lifestyle, the habit of your life. But it starts with a decision. Are you ready?

Your life is worth far more than you think, and by learning to love others with the love God gives you, you will have an influence far greater than you could ever imagine. If you will commit to this, you will experience love as God means it to be, filled with hope, energy, and joy.

My prayer for you is “that your love will grow more and more; that you will have knowledge and understanding with your love …” – Philippians 1:9 NCV.
